Zanthoxylum simulans

Not a vegetable, exactly, but looking for advice. I have two small garden patches, each in a strip about 2' wide with concrete on either side.
I've heard that Sichuan peppercorn (Z. simulans) can be grown as a shrub or as a tree. If I plant it in a confined space like this, can I really prune it into a healthy, productive shrub? Or is it going to spread out everywhere and be a pain to keep in check? And what kind of shrub shape are we talking about?
