Can we talk toilet paper holders?
Comments (68)We have 2 "Latitude" open ended holders from Gatco in the upstairs bathrooms. Each is held by two screws. They're rock solid. Love the minimal look too. But this time around we're looking at something different for the powder room we're remodeling. There are so many to choose from. This one comes in a variety of strong colors: Too 1st apartment? And too much work to switch to a new roll? Bookshelf, plus extra roll: Too rustic for us, but I like the simplicity of this one:...See MoreCan we talk carpet before I go shopping? Crosspost

Comments (14)Pretty much anything in the $3 a square foot range up will be decent quality. You want nylon or smartstrand. For a bedroom, nothing beats a plush for comfort under foot. It feels exactly like it sounds, like plush velvet on your bare feet. But, if seeing your footprints or vacuum tracks bothers you, maybe a plush isn't for you. Maybe you'd want a frieze, which is a short shag. But, you walk on the sides of the fibers on a frieze, so it won't be as durable as with a plush where you walk on the ends of the strands. However, it will hide traffic paths more, and can also feel soft because of the bulk of the yard. All carpet these days has built in stain protection except for the very cheapest, so don't let something like that in a "name" deter you from buying what feels and looks best to you. As with anything, take it home and see how it feels underfoot to you. Or, you could do the matching wood (did you ever get that project done?) in the bedrooms (selling upgrade) and have a really nice wool carpet edgebound to be a large area rug underneath. You get the benefit of taking the rug with you at selling time then....See MoreCan we talk about real estate property taxes?
Comments (46)Timely subject. Our neighborhood just received our property tax assessments for 2016, payable in 2017. Our property taxes have gone up 45%. Our home values have not. We had a refi appraisal within the last year & our home value was less than the current property taxes, prior to this increase. A 45% increase & our taxes are already high. Illinois is number 50, of 50 states, in public pension debt. In the recent past, the federal government has given Illinois stimulus money for education. The majority of that money has NOT gone to schools & students - it has paid for pension debt. We're going to need another bailout from the states that have been fiscally responsible. Edit: We will be appealing - we do every year. The first time we used an attorney, whose fee was 50% of of the tax savings. Then we started doing it ourselves. We have the choice to appeal based on "uniformity" or "overvaluation." "Uniformity" involves collecting & submitting comps of other comparable homes. "Overvaluation" is submitting a home appraisal with a date of Jan 1, 2016 so we get tax credit for the entire year. We've had better results with the home appraisal, overvaluation method. Everyone in our neighborhood's home value has jumped up by between $200,000 - $400,000, according to the taxing authority. I'd have no problem with it if our home value had truly increased, but it hasn't....See Morejust_terrilynn
