Need help for one-year-old persimmon trees

I've been growing persimmon trees from seeds. A few of them made it through the first winter and it's been just about a year since they germinated last April. They started to grow again and put out new leaves a while ago. But after a while their growth stunted and some of their leaves started turning dark (some showing brown spots, others turning black around the edges as shown in the image below). Does anyone have any idea about the possible causes of this. I also re-potted the trees to larger flower pots around the time this phenomenon started to happen, although I am not sure whether the re-potting caused it or not. I live in Kanagawa, Japan (a prefecture adjacent to Tokyo, so the climate is fairly comparable), and for the last month or so the temperature is between 20 to 25C.

Hard for me to say what is causing the problem with your tree, as local issues are unknown to me, but I would guess there may be more than one cause, and I would first suspect that the present pot and medium are contributing to a situation where the requirements of the tree are somehow not being met. I've raised kaki persimmon from seed and have found them to be persnickety when grown in containers - they do better in the ground, and I would recommend planting this tree if possible. This is best done when the tree is dormant, though with great care to disturb the roots as little as possible, it can be done during the growing season. This is not to say that persimmons are not suitable for containers; it's just that they're higher maintenance in that setting and not very forgiving.

So you say the pot and the medium (I assume it's soil in this case; sorry I'm a gardening novice) are possibilities.

The pot that I re-potted the tree into is deeper and wider than the previous one, then again I have no expertise, so this might be upsetting the tree for some reason. Also the re-potting was long overdue when I did it, and the root was so dense at the bottom of the prev pot (I found the bottom of the old (smaller) pot was literally 'saturated' with the root).

As for the soil, I didn't replace the whole; I filled the new pot half way up with the same soil, and placed the tree on top of it without removing the old soil around the root, and filled the gaps with the new (but same) soil. I don't know if this was the right thing to do or not.

Unfortunately I don't have a place on the ground to plant the tree. I could perhaps find a spot if I rigorously negotiate with neighbors (I live in a small apartment).

HI J, I have 3 peach trees. All have fruited in 2-3 years. I did not really amend the soil except for adding some top soil to fill the holes because I did not have enough native soil to put back. In my areas, rocks grow best. Rocks and boulders are everywhere when you dig a hole. I've fertilized the tree a bit in the spring each of the following years. I don't want to fertilize too much. If I were you, I'd get rid of competing weed around each tree and mulch it. Your apple tree looks stunted. A 3 yrs old apple tree should not look like that even in your type of soil. Not sure why, but you may want to consider relocating it. The soil in my yard is also land fill. The trees still grow decently. As for apple fruiting, I have apple trees that have fruited in 2nd and 3rd year on semi-dwarf rootstocks. My Honey Crisp is on an unknown rootstock. It must be at least 6 years old now but still have not fruited. My guess is it's on a standard rootstock which will take much longer. Make sure you have another variety of apple that blooms about the same time to cross pollinate. If there are crab apple trees in your neighborhood, you'd be all set.

If you can accept a delay in production for a year or so,you can prune them down to any length you want, and they will send out new growth with no problem. If they aren't getting enough sun light because of competition from the pines, they will continue to reach for the sky unless you remove the competition.

OK, so it sounds like the mass of the root structure was congested and then moved to a location in the new pot that didn't support the congested root structure. In this case I would recommend waiting until the tree goes dormant next winter to prune the roots and optimize the medium and container. Interventions in that area I believe will help with the problems with your tree. I would refer you to the container gardening forum for specific questions on those issues. In the mean time, just make sure that your present container has adequate drainage and that you're meeting the plant's basic needs.
