Comments (4)Thanks all...first ...I checked the "stems" of the bush and they really are more like tree trunks. They are about 2 inches around at least. There are some new green stems growing that had a few flowers on them...do I leave these ones alone? They are kinda aiming to fill in the one side that is pretty empty. All the flowers are now brown so I think now is the time to do anything right? The roots of this bush are out into the grass pretty far, but I have been making sure that it gets at least two gallons of water unless it rains.I have'nt put any other stuff on the bush...should I and if so ...what?I dont have much experience gardening....this is our first house (and the last until the kids move out!)I never had a garden before or trees and shrubs so I am completely in the dark on these issues. The house was empty for about fifty years until we bought it so the bush had no help at all.I really love this bush and people actually stop to look at it,so I want to "fix" it if I can. Thanks for any help!...See Moremate for viburnum nudum winterthur
Comments (106)To risk repeating what may have already been said here, Viburnum nudum needs to be cross pollinated to achieve better fruit set. It is not a question of male and female flowers borne on separate plants(dioecious), as with hollies; they simply need 2 different clones (ie different cultivars). Two plants of the same clone will pollinate each other, but fruit set is MUCH better with cross-pollination. As Viburnum nudum 'Winterthur' is one of the most commonly found clones (aka cultivars) suitable pollinators would be either an un-named clone of V. nudum (straight species), V. nudum 'Count Pulaski' or 'Earthshade'. The correct name is 'Earthshade', NOT 'Earthshades', and it was introduced by William Flemer IV, formerly of Princeton Nurseries, when he owned Earthshade Nursery in North Carolina in the 1990's. Rare Find Nursery in Jackson NJ is a mail-order source for all three of these clones. You may order online through their website or from the catalog. Comments (24)"probably another plant for the trade Saturday" Matt, I'd wait to see what this one looks like when it blooms. IME most of the viburnums are well worth their space with spring flowers and gorgeous fall color. It may not be large yet, but it now has its feet under it and should grow more quickly and help fill in your border. I personally prefer plicatum to opulus....See MoreKathleen Marineau
