Bernadine evipo061

Anyone growing Bernadine? In a pool of mixed blooming clematis, this lone example tugged my heartstrings & came home with me. The pot is 1.5 gallons with an 18" pyramid plastic trellis attached to the rim. This small structure is already too small & a replacement of suitable height needed. Evison says it grows 3-4', yet most sites stateside list 6', with a few European websites claiming up to 9'. Any experience or best guesses on mature height? Mixed reviews on pruning type of 2 or 3.

Must say the 5" blooms are quite fetching - a pearly pale blue with a hint of lavender, the bars maturing to light blush pink - with a luminescent sheen in all lights. Prefer to plant it in the garden, as conditions are good for establishing now, but will pot larger to accommodate a taller trellis if necessary to find how it responds to growing here.

Since Raymond Evison is the breeder/developer, I'd be inclined to take his opinion over the others :-) Although he does disclose in the patent application that "seasons growth attains 3 meters in height. Average spread is 50 cm." so I'd expect some flexibility in ultimate size. Any of his Boulevard Collection clems can be treated as a group 3 for pruning purposes. They were developed specifically for container culture so quite compact in size
