Cast iron bathtub for worm bin?...
Comments (2)escha, Cast iron is an excellent conductor of heat and would allow temperature swings. The bedding and VC however will somewhat act as an insulator within itself. I would say that the more volume that you have in the tub, the safer you will be. The worms will simply migrate away from the iron if it gets too hot or cold. I'm not sure about the air flow. Do you have any pictures? Anyway, I'm betting that this will work just fine....See MoreHow to remove a cast iron tub
Comments (6)Don't forget hearing protection. I removed one this past spring and was first trying a little three pound sledge hammer and it did nothing. I next tried the hammer end of an 8 pound splitting maul, and even with that it was a lot of work. I had safety glasses, with safety goggles over them, a respirator mask, industrial ear plugs, (and wanted more ear protection). I put a heavy moving blanket in the tub and beat on it through that. Pounding for all I was worth for 10 minutes or so, and then going outside to catch my breath for 10 of 15 minutes, and then returning to beat on it some more. It pretty much destroyed the moving blanket. There wasn't enough space for a reasonable swing so it was really hard (and somewhat dangerous work) Good luck....See MoreMy new 'cast iron' Toto tub sounds like a steel tub
Comments (4)When we installed our Toto cast iron tubs (1525's), DH "wrapped" as much insulation around them as he could, while the walls behind/around them were still open. Someone here mentioned doing that. We are very, very happy with our tubs, BTW. If we ever move/have to re-do bathrooms, we'd use Toto cast iron tubs again (maybe longer ones if space allows)....See MoreAcrylic Tubs vs Cast Iron - do people really notice
Comments (6)I just installed an acrylic tub and I'm thrilled with it - it's SO much nicer than the old porcelain monstrosity I had. The thing that everyone notices and comments on is the depth - it's much deeper than anything I could find in cast iron. I was willing to trade the duribility of cast for the depth. I think for resale, you'll probably find people on both sides of the fence, so get what pleases you and take good care of it - a tub in good shape will be a good thing, no matter what it's made of....See Morewritersblock (9b/10a)
