Growing a lemon tree from a grocery store lemon. Good idea or Bad
Comments (23)Growing most types of fruit from seed is generally a bad idea. There is a high chance the fruit will not be as good as the parent variety. For those of you who are not aware of how this works, in nature fruit species can have a lot of genetic diversity from generation to generation. When a good producing tree is found, it then gets propagated from cuttings. People usually do not want to take the trouble of growing a fruit tree from seed when they do not even know whether the fruit will be good. Generally though, lemons produce truer to seed than oranges do. Not talking about citrus here, but for fruit trees in general, it is theoretically possible to breed fruit that produces truer to seed, but it takes many more generations of breeding. These are often traditional heirloom varieties that have been around a long time. Whereas the seed from a Navel orange will not really result in a Navel variety, some of these heirloom varieties can essentially be continually propagated from seed. The terms "heirloom", "true to seed", and fruit "variety" can all be very relative and ambiguous terms....See More25 year old deck in bad shape with newbie DIY-er on the job
Comments (1)I'm sorry, but I wasn't able to load the pics. That may be a problem on my end. Anyways, 25 years is a pretty good life span for most wood decks, especially if they are not kept up. That said, sanding, which can be a lot of work, will eliminate the other steps. Put a straight edge on the deck and see how much material you will have to take off, to get the deck flat. If it is too much, use a small orbital sander to get into the areas that the larger sander will not get. If you can pull loose nails, and replace them with screws, that would be a good thing. That will also give you a idea of the condition of the floor joists. If the screws will not hold, that probably means the joists are rotten on the top. Make sure that you use large exterior deck screws. Size needs to be a little larger then the nails, they are replacing Mark...See MoreHow late is too late to re-pot a soggy Meyer Lemon tree?
Comments (21)Update, six weeks later. The tree doesn't want to go on the cart... Red arrows point to one sucker branch and one sucker bud(?). Purple dashed line is what I believe to be the graft scar. Green arrows point to what I hope are new growth above the graft. These appeared all within the last week; maybe due to the days getting longer, maybe due to a few degrees rise in temperature inside as some other inhabitants were running fevers. I have read on this forum that sucker branches are usually not desirable. Are they worth letting grow for a while, if they are the only source of active chloroplasts on the tree? My hunch is yes, but I admit knowing very little about the regrowth tendencies of Meyer lemons. My next question is whether the old branches are actually dead,or whether they have some hope of rejuvenation: Most of these branches used to be green, but are now brown or near black. Some show hints of green near the branch collar. Is it worthwhile to prune back branches which look brown, if that might encourage growth from the same collar? Or do brown branches ever return to green, and it's worthwhile to wait? Thanks, all!...See MorePruning in-ground lemon tree for shape
Comments (7)Thanks for the advice everyone! Sounds like pruning may not be a good idea at this point. Other than pruning, is there anything else that can be done to encourage lower branching and new leaves? I'd eventually like to re-shape the tree to keep harvests within arm's reach, especially as it is planted along a slope. I'm willing to set the tree back a couple years for bringing the size down if necessary. Thanks....See MoreAdrian Chircu
