Garbage Disposal

I was at my MFG home dealer on Friday going over the building specs for my Clayton SW 16x76. And I brought up the need for a garbage disposal. My sells rep didn't think she's ever seen one in a mfg home and the service/maintenance guy was there too and he said he'd never seen one.

I thought that they were joking with me but they were serious. My dealer is going to have to ask the builder about it! So I want to ask y'all: "Do you have or have you ever seen a garbage disposal in a mfg home? And, if the builder cannot put it in, should I be able to buy one from, say, Sears and have them install it -- will the plumbing and drain, etc. be receptive to having one installed?

Garbage disposals are very common in manufactured homes that are not hooked up to septic tanks. Like in manufactured home parks in town. It was an option on my home that I foolishly declined, with intent to compost instead. If you want a garbage disposal at a future date, the single biggest issue is making sure an electrical outlet is installed under the sink that is controlled by a switch on the wall near the sink. Those can't be installed after the fact, if it is an outside wall, due to the steel framing of a manufactured home, and we all like to have window over the sink so it's probably an outside wall. The plumbing issues are minor compared to the electrical issue.

Cathy, this is fantastic information. Just what I was looking for. Thanks so much. I'm going to meet with the manager of the MHP today and I'll double check, I think he said the park is on well water and it is included with the park fee. I'll have to make sure.

And, it's early enough that I can get the switch installed when the home is built. Now that you mentioned it, I think I remember some people with the switch for the disposal in the cabinet under the sink. Gosh, that goes back a long way. I think it was when they were first becoming popular so the switch wasn't installed during construction. The disposal was added later and you had to open the cabinet door to access the switch.

maybe ask them why? I assume the sink is so deep that you can't get enough space under there to do an appropriate p trap.

“I don't put anything down my disposal that might require more than 3/4 hp.” Why should someone be limited to that? If you’re going to the trouble of installing a disposal, why not install one that is high quality that you don’t have to carefully pick and choose what goes into it? “If someone uses theirs to grind up bones” For the underpowered disposals that are less than 3/4 hp, it is not a question of bones. That is hyperbole. The Badger-style and low-powered disposals cannot handle fruit rinds or even celery strings - really, much of everyday foods that could go into a 3/4 hp disposal is risky to those underpowered disposals. “I wouldn't pay for more hp than I need.” The Waste King L-3200 3/4 hp disposal I recommended above is $115 and comes with an 8-year warranty. The larger Waste King L-8000 TC is also about $115 and comes with a 20-year warranty. How much was your low-powered disposal, and how long the warranty? You are missing the point that it’s not only about the grinding ability. When you buy a 3/4 hp disposal (not a Badger), you are also buying better quality parts, longevity and long warranties. “Waste King is owned and manufactured by Moen.” Not sure why you mentioned this, but to be clear, Waste King garbage disposals are manufactured by Anaheim Manufacturing, which is owned by Moen. Moen is an American faucet manufacturer with an international scope, including its ownership of Anaheim Manufacturing. Moen is known for its many innovations and inventions in the faucet industry. In plumber polls, Moen is usually the first or second preferred faucet. I am mentioning this since you think Moen’s ownership of Anaheim Manufacturing is important, so the OP might appreciate some background on it.

Any issues with air switch for garbage disposal?

No problems in the over 15 years ours has been in use. They're safer with wet hands because there is no direct connection to an electrical circuit. They're less intrusive than a switch and no needless interruption in the backsplash. I can't think of any negatives to them! Both our disposal and the air switch are from InSinkErator. We have the Evolution Septic Assist since we're on septic instead of sewer. I suspect your contractor just doesn't want to do it, for whatever reason, so he's giving you a line of bull****. BTW...If your disposal is InSinkErator, be sure you do not get a "Badger" -- that's the cheap production builder model and it does not last. Get an Evolution model.

I have two Evolutions and love them, but want to caution the OP that they are longer (deeper) than earlier models, so the connection path to the DWV plumbing should be checked to avoid the need for an "in-wall" revision. Second, they are very quiet, but this is partly due to the constrictive splash-guard entry that running water will cover. What can occur is easier blockage at the splash guard from small bits requiring one to take some push action that more open (and noisier) splash guards might not require. Do not fear the monster; the grinding action is quite far down from the splash guard so there is no finger risk at the guard.

A general rule of thumb is that unless there is a city sewer line, garbage disposals are not recommended. Every home I've lived in had a septic system and I never have used a garbage disposal because the septic system can't break down everything fast enough.

What Christopher_H said. If the place is on well water, it is less likely to be on city sewer than if it is on city water. Check with the park about the sewer connection. The switch under the sink was going to be my only option for a garbage disposal, and doing even that was going to be massively destructive to the back of my kitchen cabinet and the wall of my home under the sink.

Found out from the MHP mgr. that the park is on city water & sewer.

And, found out from the dealer that they will be able to install the disposal.

Issue settled. :-)
