Need help with stain for red oak floors please.

I also posted this in the flooring forum. We're putting red oak on our upstairs floors that were all previously carpeted. The downstairs hardwood floor and stairs are a medium toned red oak. I like the medium stain except that is shows too much amber for the upstairs decor.
Do I have to match the stain, or can I come close without the amber? I think a medium brown tone is best without any amber/red/yellowish tones. I think the stain on the downstairs floors is Provincial. If I did stain the floors the same, is there a way to reduce the amber tones upstairs? I'd prefer if both floors were similar, but think it's ok if they don't match 100%. Any recommendations?
Thanks!
