Comments (6)jonnyb - thanks for that link to Papou's garden. It's interesting to note that leap from 3rd year to 4th year hostas. We've all heard "first year they sleep, second year they creep, third year they leap" but it appears that in most cases, it's in the 4th full year that the number of eyes and the overall size really explode. Most of mine were planted in 2013 so I'll have to be patient for another full season before I see a huge difference in my garden. Maybe I should be recording eye numbers this year! Good stuff....See MoreWhere is the Hosta Seed Growers Forum?
Comments (33)If you're looking to make a lot of money, hybridizing hostas is not the way to do it! When you consider the hours and hours spent doing crosses, keeping records, harvesting, cleaning, planting seeds, caring for them under lights all winter, and then letting the seedlings mature (5+ years) so they can be properly evaluated....it's a labor of love. Hybridizers and most people who find sports in their garden generally work with a nursery to introduce the new plant. Established nurseries have a ready customer base. The main hosta nurseries that deal with introducing new plants generally will pay a royalty to the hybridizer for every plant they sell for a certain period of time. It may be a small amount, but the nursery takes on the responsibility of having the plant tissue cultured (it doesn't always work), then grows the liners to retail size (there will be losses), markets the plant, and delivers to the customer. All of this comes with a cost the nursery must be able to recoup. New plants may seem expensive, but there is a lot of time and money involved in bringing a new plant to market....See MoreNewbie to forum; Hosta ID Please

Comments (11)I recently had some real issues myself. I had recently changed my email, but to change it they had to email a signin to the old account and then I could open the link to make the change. Problem was I had so many emails in the other account that it wouldn’t even open it. So round and round we went. I finally got it straightened out and when my new email went through I lost all of my idea books that I had saved! Now I am going back and recovering some of them, but what a pain! one of the problems I learned is there is no number for technical support of any kind....See More- 8 years agolast modified: 8 years agojosephines167 z5 ON Canada thanked popmama (Colorado, USDA z5)
