I tend to grow based on look, which I found out wasn't a good idea if you're looking for flavor and disease resistant.

I've never really done that *entirely* for the name's sake (but close). Name has had a big influence on some varieties, but it has never been the only reason, as far as I recall, offhand. The closest variety that comes to mind is Cherokee Tiger Black Pear. I'm growing it this year (it's still in seedling form). Basically, all I know about it is that it was grown in Florida during a very recent, very hot, very wet year that only some tomato varieties withstood (and it was apparently one of them that could withstand it). I'm hoping it's a very tasty, productive, heat-tolerant, black pear tomato. That would be pretty awesome, but it could be anything. However, from the sound of the name, one might surmise that it's a black, striped, pear tomato that either tastes similar to Cherokee Purple or is related to it.

Seek No Further Love Apple is another where the name has had a big influence. Although I'm growing Girl Girl's Weird Thing, I'm not actually growing it for the name at all. Just for the record, Girl Girl is a dog (and 'weird thing' refers to the mutant tomato that she found).

Pink Cheeks is another (I'm growing it this year). It does look like an awesomely colored tomato.

Actually, I'm growing Veni Vidi Vici. I'm pretty sure the name is the reason there. :) However, it is supposed to be a good variety. I don't know a lot about it, but I figured the name might sell some people on it, and I liked it. I also wanted to find out what I thought of it.

Purple Bumble Bee, Juan Flamme, Orange Blossom, Mr. Stripey, and Green Zebra.

I don't grow tomatoes based on the appeal of their names. Actually I don't like odd names , the names that sound too foreign that I cannot pronounce and/or spell. .

I did grow "Box Car Willie" because of it's name. haha. It turned out to be OK for me....just not that great. It did not return.

I happened to be growing BCW this year too. But not because of its name.

BTW: it is growing vigorously and I think it has tiny buds.

BTW: I remember I grew " 4th of July" because of its name , for two reasons:

1- 4th of July is one of favorite days.

2- For the suggestion that it will yield ripe tomato by the fourth. But it did not. So I am not growing it again.

Monkey's Ass tomatoes were the hit of the plant swap the year I started them. Wasn't impressed myself but started seeds again at the request of one of the swap participants the next year.

Bobbie, a heart, because my nickname is Bobbie. Grew that one a couple of years but no hearts this year as am cutting back the number of tomato plants.

I'm always temped by Marianna's Peace for obvious reasons.

Marianna's Peace is supposed to be one of the best-tasting tomatoes, some say. I think I'm growing it this year.

I'm growing the Payette tomato because it was apparently named after Payette in Idaho (whether the county, the city, or the national forest, I'm not sure, but I live in the county, and it was bred in Parma, which is in Canyon county, which borders Payette county). The plant seems pretty awesome, actually. It looks different from all my other tomatoes (the closest one in likeness to it is probably Big Dwarf, which I assume is New Big Dwarf). I like tomatoes named after places I've lived. My hope with the Payette tomato was that it would be locally adapted and do extra well here. I found that the tomatoes are supposed to be much larger than I first thought, too, which is nice.

Talking about the names : I like "Cherokee Purple". It reminds me of the song lyrics :

Cherokee people, Cherokee tribe ;
