I have a question about the staghorn fern. I received one as a gift and it is mounted on a piece of wood. I don't have anywhere to hang it so would like to move it to a pot or something similar (not a basket as I have nowhere to hang that either). Any suggestions how I should do this? Everything I can find is about mounting it on wood, trees, etc.

HoustonPat, I wasn't going to say anything, but when you said "keep an eye out for scale on stags and birdnest..."....well, I just could not hold my peace. Boy are you right!! I was keeping my collection of young stags and birdnests on my south/east/west side sunporch last winter, with a fairly large scheffelera. First thing I know, sticky mess everywhere. Oh yeah, it was scale. I ended up murdering the scheffelera as a scale magnet, and then I went to work saving my ferns. I have some that I dearly love. So I totally concur with what you say about scale. And, I put several of my stags in a north facing bathroom, which had clerestory windows giving constant bright light for this winter period. I spritzed them down, and they did fine. But then I tend to rotate things instead of leaving them always in one spot. I also immersed the entire stag fern to deep water the inside of the board and moss, or in a couple of cases, the SOIL. Then this spring I moved them outdoors where they have been flourishing very well, with some supplemental watering during our dry spells. If you have a plant in such a location as a bathroom, it will not be a "set it and forget it" matter.

I was pretty sure I mounted them right, I was just a bit concerned because every photo I have seen shows the brownish shield leaf as well as the green ones everyone is used to seeing. I've got these little guys in a south facing window, but they don't get direct sunlight as there are two large sycamore trees that filter the light nicely. It's my understanding that they prefer filtered or indirect light. One more question, if you please... should I wait to soak them with water until they are relatively dry? Or should I keep them moist at all times? The information I've gathered is a bit conflicting on this. It sounds like you are successful at growing these ferns... any help is greatly appreciated! I know that this is late, but I made a way to lower mine into a wheelbarrow (actually it's more ON the wheelbarrow as it won't fit into it) for hurricanes. I almost lost my big staghorn to Charlie...It got nearly beaten to death and all new growth stopped for almost 2 years. I use the same chain method (no pipe through, just criss crossed stainless 2" links) but at the top, I have a tow strap that I threw over a MUCH higher branch and tied off on a lower one. It takes my husband to pull and me to get under the thing and push to take it higher into the tree, or him holding and me getting smushed under it to lower it. On the other hand, it hasn't gotten beaten up by any more high winds!
