Protecting my wall from a mounted staghorn fern

I recently bought a staghorn fern and I plan to mount it on a cedar board. It sounds like the best way to water it is to periodically submerge the board + fern in water, but I'm worried that it will start to ruin my wall when I hang it up again. Does the cedar tend to try out quickly after a watering, or do I have to leave it off the wall for a long time in order for it to dry out? Given how frequently it seems to require waterings (I've read it can be as often as once a week), it seems like it would be a pain to leave it down to dry out for a long time each week.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thanks!
