heuchera planting

Looking for any suggestions on placement of Heuchera in a new flower bed which is about 3'x6'. I want to use a assortment of colors. Years ago, I thought someone posted some pictures of their Heuchera beds but can't find any now. Didn't plan on using any other plants but after going through pictures on this forum, I'm thinking that maybe I should.

It would depend on how many heucheras you really like and which ones they are. I prefer the variety of plants approach but ymmv. Where in the world you are would dictate what plants you could grow with them.

I am in Michigan in zone 5B. I have always liked Heucheras and have had them scattered in my flower beds for years. I am working on a new spot that I can see from the house and would really like to transplant my Heucheras into that spot, so there is a intense showing of them. The area is 5' by 12', I'm guessing, on a slight incline and on the edge of some trees. I have about a dozen different colors (purple, orange, green and marbled) and didn't know if someone had a suggestion of placement, color wise, so that I don't have to think too hard about it. I guess it'll be a shot in the dark as long as they compliment each other. I am going to have a solid green hosta behind the Heucheras and the other half of the planting area is going to have a bleeding heart (that my daughter gave to me about 16 years ago) with raspberry splash lungwort, jack frost brunnera and a lady's mantle. Love to see some pictures of similar areas you have done. Thanks for any ideas you might have.

Heuchera is a wonderful plant in the right location, which for most locations is partial shade. The attraction is in the foliage which is available in a number of colors and textures. More and more of my garden is devoted to colorful foliage over the color of blooms which only last for a few weeks. Kinda depends on where you are :-) Box stores would not be my first choice of a source......they usually mass market just the inferior stuff like MG but it varies from store to store. . East of the Rockies, I'd hunt out Fafards Nursery or 51L mix. These are professional grade products but vendors will often bring in as special requests. On the west coast, look for Kellogg Soil products, carried by better independent retail nurseries. They sell under the names Gardner&Bloome or Master Nursery. Both will have several grades of potting soil - imo, the best tends to be the priciest :-) You can also customize less desirable potting soils by adding bark fines (about the diameter of a dime in size) sometimes sold as "soil conditioner" or in pet stores as reptile bedding. And add coarse perlite or pumice or turface (may be harder to find). I'd advise at least 1 part each of the bark and perlite/pumiice/turface to no more than 5 parts of the unadulterated potting soil. You can even up that ratio to less of the potting mix if you prefer.

Thanks so much for your advice, that's what I was afraid of. Yes, I've been curious because whatever the culprit is, just randomly chooses plants in my yard. Will check the stubs again & see if I can tell what's eating it by your description. (I guess I need to edit my profile to add my zone as well. I'm in middle TN, just outside of Nashville.) I've lived in this house for 17 yrs and this is the 1st time I've had this much damage on anything! I've noticed an abundance of deer this year, unlike we've seen in this neighborhood since it was 1st built. The deer kept eating the buds off my tall phlox but finally left them alone & they bloomed. I assume it was deer since the plants were tall & even in a slightly raised bed. I've had those phlox for years & have never been touched! I hope the shade garden makes it. I love wildlife, but sure hate throwing money away! : )
