When we built in Florida-rattlesnake, coral snake, water moccasin, golden eagle, bald eagle, egrets, sand hill cranes, neighbors’ horses, pair of bobcats (male walked up to our French doors and stared), cardinals, robins one day each year on their way north, night hawk, great horned owl, and a very rare gopher tortoise. Oh, and an escaped emu.

Raccoons I'd expect to crawl up the side of the house. And go up there to sleep, something it seems would happen during the day. Maybe get a ladder and look during the day, in case it is a raccoon and it has a latrine going up there. Because their poo is a human health hazard and shouldn't be left up there to maybe infect water coming out of the downspouts later (search racoon roundworm for background information).

Hahahahaha! Oh dear, he is an inquisitive little one, isn't he! I guess he just wanted a good look at all your treasures behind the glass, surely not having any notion why in the world he isn't allowed to get in there and curl up amongst them. Oh, but doesn't he look sweet and contented all sound asleep! Well, they all do, and I guess that's why we let them live. (And by live, I mean do whatever they darn well please.) Gotta love em. ❤

Generally fertilizer doesn't do much during the winter. The time for the boost was late last fall, after your lawn stopped growing, but before the first hard freeze. At this point, if you did nothing over the winter, you can fertilize early with an organic. Had you done the boost last fall, then the lawn should not need more fertilizer until May or late May. You can save money by using the raw materials that go into commercially bagged organic fertilizers. Corn meal, alfalfa meal or pellets, soybean meal, and/or cottonseed meal should be available in 50# bags at your local feed store for much less than buying commercially bagged materials. The application rate is 15 to 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet. The animals in your yard may or, more likely, may not be attracted to these feed materials. Certainly these materials are feed to animals in captivity, but the reason is there is usually not enough fresh forage available to animals in captivity. What I have seen most often is birds attracted after applying corn meal. Even when I lived in the country with several species of deer and antelope roaming freely, no animals seemed to be overly attracted to my lawn after fertilizing. My neighbors feed deer corn to the deer, but those same deer were not attracted to the corn meal in my lawn. Do these materials actually work? Here's a picture posted here back in 2011 by mrmumbles. He dropped a handful of alfalfa pellets onto his zoysia lawn in mid May and took the picture in mid June. Even though the pic is low quality, it is easy to see the improved color, density, and growth a month after fertilizing.
