Home Depot Medicine Cabinet

Or have you seen it up close? I found it at Home Depot, but it is hanging up so high I really can't tell anything about it.

Our new home will have a small powder room, and I'd really like to have a medicine cabinet above the pedestal sink, as it would provide a minimal amount of storage. We have that setup in our current home's powder room, and it works well. My current medicine cabinet is all mirror, and I'm tired of wiping fingerprint smudges off the edge of the mirror. I thought something with a wood trim and a knob to pull would at least eliminate that issue. It would go with our decor, as well. (OTOH, perhaps a recessed medicine cabinet with mirror only would be less imposing in a small room and make the room feel roomier.)

We're also looking for a low-budget item.

Since it's a powder room, will it really be used to store many items and/or used very often? My preference would be an interesting mirror with a small shelf & towel bar (over or top of the toilet) to hold a box of tissues. This is a "before" pic of our guest bathroom - you can see I had a shelf on top of the toilet that held books and a tissue box. Towel hook nearby.

No, worries, keep the comments coming. So, I was in your position, there was no info on this line of cabinets online. To get a sample, I ended up buying the sink cabinet just to take a look at the door in person. Thank goodness it worked out. I really liked the look and texture of the doors. These cabinets are 1/3 or less than custom quotes I was getting in the Bay Area, CA. Experience (I've put together tons of IKEA products in my lifetime, so compared to IKEA the ease of putting together these cabinets is not in line with IKEA's standards and their tolerances compared to IKEA are truly lacking. I would order a cheap one from Home Depot and see how you like it, if you don't like just return it to Home Depot. Just tell them the quality did not meet your expectations. Final impressions: As I said in a previous post, when you put the counter top base layer and screw these cabinets into the wall and put on the quartz counter top, they become rock solid. One of the contractors even sat / knelt on top of the counter top by the sink to finish some trim work. I knelt on it to adjust and put the wall cabinet doors in place (I'm 6'1"). Some finishing notes: Handles are Blankett Handles and the Toe Kicks are IKEA as well. We had to modify the Fabritec Eurostyle toekick clips to fit the IKEA. We shaved them down to size. Upper cabinet is from IKEA and so are the floating Lack Shelves. So, if you really like the door style, like I did, then it is worth the cost and trouble. Overall this kitchen cost me roughly 11 grand including labor and materials. All the appliances are original (carried over from previous kitchen). Range hood is new, but didn't cost an arm and a leg. The ceiling was raised 6" (before recessed fluorescent box dropped the ceiling) and a wall was removed by the dishwasher to open up the space.

I used it in my rental remodel 2.5 years ago. The paint is chipping. I purchased it used from The Restore, $10. It's been around. :0) No complaints. I used this one above my pedestal sink:

As an aside, your kitchen cabinet door style does not need to match the style of the doors in your house. For what it's worth, Shaker is the most popular door style currently and it has been used for a long time. I used to live in a house that had a kitchen remodel done in 1997 that used white Shaker cabinets and that's what I am going to do when I get around to a remodel in a couple years.

I've looked at a gazillion medicine cabinets at HD, and I think it's ok. It has these staples to hold the corners together, though. Also, you need to know that it is a laminate, so not painted.

I think it is fine for the price, but I would definitely get it recessed in a small powder room. Is there space between the studs? As for quality, you get what you pay for. If you have several people going in and out of it often, it may not hold up. Usually moisture is not a problem in a PR as it is in a room with a shower.

My powder room is miniscule. i took out the recessed cabinet (it was old and rusty) and hung a mirror with a pretty frame. I then bought a small table with a cabinet for storage. It holds extra toiletries and rolls of TP. I got it at a thrift shop and it is called a smoking table. It has a recessed area for your ashtray and a humidor in the door itself. Kind of cute. I put a decorative plate in the recessed area and some hand cream on the plate.

Yes, I definitely need something there for storage. There isn't really any other room for closed storage. I had considered putting one of those recessed medicine chests that you can insert a picture into the front and it just looks like framed art in the room. However, that medicine chest is much more expensive, plus there would be the added cost of the artwork and a mat to go around it. And I'd still need to buy a mirror for above the pedestal sink.

Thanks for the heads-up about it being laminate. Is it possible to paint laminate, if it should need it in the future?

I probably need to buy it, take it out of the box, and see how it looks. And I will be sure to measure to make sure it will fit between the studs. Framing should start on the house soon, so it would be good to get this settled so that the framing could be done so that the medicine chest could be centered over the pedestal sink.
