Timing spring bloom...in New England, which daffs bloom w phlox?
Comments (7)vetivert, I have stayed away from forget me nots because of the traveling they do. [g] I will check the minis and the species daffs, thanks. Pitimpinai, my phlox just started blooming 2 days ago. Looks like our timing is pretty close to each other. That is so funny that you mention 'Curlew'. I forgot I had it...lol. It has been blooming since April 12th and still looks good in part shade. My phlox is in full sun so the timing might be a little off. I could pick up a few bulbs in the fall and try it. I think you are right, you just can't figure out bloom time any more. I guess we will just have to keep experimenting. Maybe if we purchase the latest bloomers we will find one that works with phlox? So disappointing when you are waiting to see your plan work out and it doesn't. This has been the strangest spring. Great yes, but I can hardly believe it is almost May 1st. It feels like it should be almost the end of May. [g] I wonder what we'll be like in 5 years?...See More(Twin Cities, Minnesota) When to move spring-blooming plants outdoors?
Comments (3)Late frosts and/or cold weather is not really much of a handicap to plants that are fully hardy for your zone, although they do need to be gradually hardened off to be properly acclimated before planting out. And may still suffer foliar damage even after that, should cold weather hit again. What would be more of a concern is the workability of the soil that early in your area and the soil temps. If the ground is still frozen or overly saturated with rain or snowmelt, then obviously you need to wait until all that is past. And if the soil remains cold, early season transplants will not do much of anything anyway - cold soil temps do not encourage root development and establishment and plants remain vulnerable. Your best bet may be to wait until conditions in your area support planting out and forgo the potential for flowering this season....See MoreIrises for spring blooms?
Comments (4)Try Iris pallida -- foliage is outstanding all season, and the light-to-mid blue flowers are highly fragrant (reminiscent of grapes to my nose). I have the green-and-white variegated variety, there's also yellow variegated available (link shows the yellow). Iris pallida 'Variegata' (Dalmatian Iris) (gardenia.net) I don't care for tall bearded iris -- they get too ratty after bloom. I do have a clump of dwarf bearded which is nice, I've divided it so many times over the past 20-something years, it just keeps on going! The dwarf iris stay much tidier, although some years the foliage is better than others. Really, though -- can't go wrong with the I. pallida....See MoreDon’t plant spring blooming bulbs until a hard freeze – true?
Comments (7)On impulse, I checked one of my bulbs catalogs today. It stated that ground temperature should be 55 degrees F or below, and nighttime temps consistently below 40 F. I've never tested soil temperature before, and don't have the tools for it. I guess normally I am so busy in the fall, that planting bulbs "too early" has never been an issue. Too busy cleaning dead stuff out to even have a bare surface to plant into. I induced a friend to order a lot of bulbs - she's never planted bulbs before - so I was hoping to give her some solid advice....See MorePoorbutroserich Susan Nashville
