WC just another word of praise for this plant - I have a little one and it bloomed for me, so I think these bloom quite small...I'll probably keep dividing and selling/trading/giving off chunks as it gets bigger - don't you love plants that you can do that with? I think the root disturbance thing depends on timing - I got mine as a division and I could tell it was recently potted because it was loose in the pot. I was pretty worried about the fabled coelogyne sensitivity to repotting, which I have also seen with other coelogynes (ie nitida)...However, I must have been lucky because I guess it was the beginning of the growing season and it broke out of dormancy with vigor and bloomed the following winter/spring! Also, my house never got below 65F and it still managed to bloom, so I don't think it needs very cool conditions although I suspect you can get a nicer blooming with cooler conditions. I have flaccida and it hasn't done anything for nearly a year ... it's finally putting out a new little growth/spike/whatever, but I must be doing something wrong with it. I wonder if the primary is easier to grow...

I could tell you how many 'no more' bought but that might not be nice. Let's just say its more than three times the 12 I got at the Greenery. If there is anyone reading this in the Okanagan looking for very new varieties, this is a good place to go. The owner (it's a family run nursery with a long history in Kelowna) gets tissue cultures in the summer, grows them until they go dormant and brings them back to sell in the spring. They are on the small side but no different than some of the very new varieties I've mail ordered before. The best thing is that he sells plants like Captains Adventure, Purple Heart, Raspberry Sundae, Emerald Charger, Itty Gold and Taurus for $6.95. Hard to beat. Paula, I had a neighbor named Paula and I would have gone to Grant High School had I still lived on Tiara Street. We moved to Garden Grove when I was 10. In Elementary I went to JB Monlux. I'm a second season gardener with a newby question. There are lots of seasoned & experienced gardeners on this and other forums here at GW. As a newb, you mostly can't go wrong following the cautionary advice of folks with more hosta garden experience. If you value it, protect it. That might be a good mantra to follow until you've got some experience under your belt. Gardeners are risk takers every time they shove a spade into the soil but experienced gardeners take a moment to consider other factors before shoving that spade into the soil. I know what my specific climate here in southern New England can throw at me & my plants. Do you? At what temp should I plant these potted beauties? Plants grown in temperature-controlled nursery/hothouse conditions are generally unprepared for outdoor weather conditions/extremes. If you decide to plant them out, keep a close eye on them and take steps to protect them until they're strong enough to fend for themselves. Once established, hostas are tough as nails. Remember--once the roots have taken hold, it's tough to get rid of them. I've got one or two that have dwindled since I planted them. They're the exception, not the rule.

You can always embrace the change and look at the move as an opportunity to create a brand new garden!! I was very reluctant to leave my old garden of nearly 30 years. So many wonderful plants and so many memories! And that reluctance to leave it very likely made me delay the move much longer than I should have :-) Since that time I have created two new gardens for myself in very different locations and with very different conditions. And plants!! Neither have been as complicated or as large (or mature) as my previous garden but both better fit my current lifestyle and both were/are equally appealing to me. My only regret is that my current garden is not as large as I would like (really tiny!!) so I have resorted more to containers than inground plantings. And the deer are much too frequent and hungry visitors!! But I don't really miss any of the plants from my old garden - except for the trees I planted - would have liked to see those mature. And I have added some of the plants that I previously grew, simply because I like them so much or they suit the situation well. But I have also added a lot of new-to-me plants as well. And that is part of the fun.....creating something new and quite different!!
