Comments (2)It's called "oriental express." Package says about 14" long but I guess they are a little off. :-)...See MoreAnybody still planting out??
Comments (16)As the season progresses and perennials from the past few years come into full size, I am having to face the naked truth that I have very little real estate left for seedlings. My goal for this weekend is to squeeze in the last little bit I can get in there and then get a real plan together for giving away seedlings. I am tempted to make up mixed containers to place around, but I know from previous years of taking this "escape route" that the watering needs of anything under 1/2 barrel size will just cause me stress all summer. I only have a few kinds of perennial seedlings left to get in, but they get to go to the front of the line in terms of planting. Next, the zinnias and cosmos I just can't do without for cut flowers. Right behind them is 2-3 kinds of nicotiana I've not grown before that I really want to grow and flower because I want to save seeds! Chocolate, pink sensation, one labeled "white" that is not the large sylvestris that I already have. A red baby Bella that I grew last year and really liked.I just remembered though that there are also a few kinds of feathered celosia I really wanted to try and have seedlings for. Oh, it's so hard to prioritize! And then theres the eight 6" pots of castor bean that must go somewhere soon...the leaves are already 5 inches across. I know I had a plan for these when I seeded the pots, but for the life of me I can't remember! And I want to take time away from planting to take some pictures. I finally figured out how to easily use the "image file upload" option to grab pictures from the "my pictures" area of microsoft on my computer, without having to use photo bucket or Picasa or any of the on-line services. Yup, it's going to be a busy weekend!...See MoreAnybody growing wildflower gardens?
Comments (9)Might we see some pics? :) Fifteen years ago when I started this garden on raw land in a forest I scattered a package of wildflower seeds in a couple of areas. Only one of those flowering plants (Dame's Rocket or Hesperis matronalis) has continued to self-seed altho I may have eradicated them this last summer with the vigorous weeding out of plants I don't really want and heavy mulching. Dame's Rocket is a very tough plant that can be invasive. While I have a lot of space to garden there is a problem with some wildflower mixes in that they can be invasive and destroy pasture lands. Oxeye daisy is one of those I don't need more of altho they came in with the hay loads, and not the mix I planted. There is also a lot of wild yarrow on my land altho I'll seed the colored yarrows but not the white. So, yes I love wildflower gardens and plan to again seed some altho will not buy a mix but will choose which flowers I want. This will be in a wilder area outside of my perennial/shrub garden. I plan to seed some clovers for the bees but won't plant too many as I have horses grazing here in the summer and too much clover is not good for them. I wonder if there are wildflowers that horses won't eat?! Lamb's Ears are one of the few they don't like, and perhaps yarrow. I'll also again seed shasta daisies as have eradicated most that I had. Im my mind I picture a selective wildflower garden with grazing grasses and paths as a transition from my fenced garden to the forest. It's another project I'm thinking about! And I know it will be a lot of work....See Morei was out in the garden today and?
Comments (4)the flat row covers are for heating the soil. they pull it up when the soil temp is correct and then plant. the yellow flowered plants are rape. they eat the plants when small but when they get larger they wait for the flowers to go to seed. they make an oil out of the seed. the plants to the right of the rape are mustard. i am supposed to return home at the end of april but that might change. my dw is taking care of the mouser or vice versa. i'm not sure. william...See Moretuben
