Home Gym - Modern & Massive!
This home gym is from one of my favourite design projects to date! In June of 2014, Bryan Baeumlers Construction Company (Baeumler Quality Construction) asked me to meet with clients to discuss an upcoming 3000 square foot basement renovation. I was completely thrilled & ecstatic for such an amazing opportunity which turned into my largest design project to date! (see links at end of this article to view the entire space)
The Home Gym - Bright, Colourful & Energizing. I want to share with you the before pictures, the design process and how we overcame one of the biggest challenges in this space.

The 400 square foot gym is the first room you see as you come down the stairs. For this reason, I wanted it to set the tone for what was to come for the rest of this contemporary & fun space. Below is a photo of the renovation in progress.
Here is the original concept drawing I created for this modern gym. Glass doors & walls keep the space airy and bright. (3D drawings done in Chief Architect program)

These are the carpet tiles that I selected with my clients. We used gray for the middle of the gym and the colourful carpet tiles were used around the border of the room to add colour & interest to the space.
In my drawings the ceiling was shown painted 'Chartreuse' by Benjamin Moore and my clients loved that idea, so that's what we did! (carpet tiles tied in with this colour)
A huge challenge in this design was coming up with a creative yet functional way to cover up the 12 foot electrical panel that is also in this space. After exploring various options, the Baeumler Project Manager came up with the idea of using a stainless steel awning - like one you would see for a motorhome or RV.

The small niche was the perfect place to incorporate some storage for towels and other accessories for the gym.

This basement also includes: A movie theatre with concession/games area; a bathroom with a sauna; a living space with a poker room, pool table, large media unit with fireplace, a bar and even a secret Xbox room. Yup, it was pretty unbelievable!

Suggestions for giving my house a modern facelift
Comments (50)So things are coming along nicely, but not without complications. I was going to go with breaking up the visible part of the columns (below the fascia) into equal sections but then one of the channels would go right through my sconce lights on the sides of my garage doors. So I made the sections a little larger to give me some space between the top channels and the electric boxes for the sconce lights. One issue is that the house is old and so the fascia isn't perfectly straight/level. So the space between the top channel and fascia isn't the same on every column. My installer made the executive decision to keep the channels at the same level rather than shifting them up/down based on the level of the fascia. So far I don't think it's noticeable. But I'd still like to give myself some more breathing room for the sconces. At the garage I'd like to put the top channels about an inch higher than they are on the columns. Do you think that would be obvious? There's at least ten feet between the garage and the nearest column. Here's a photo from before. I haven't started looking for sconces but I feel my options will be very limited with tight spacing. Comments (60)My husband just pointed me to this story from Port Perry Ontario (he had siblings in Port Perry several years ago). The Golden Girls of Port Perry Lifted from that article: The national median monthly cost of a private room in a nursing home in the U.S. is $8,365, according to Genworth Financial, which means it costs more than $100,000 annually to live in a retirement home, and the price tag is only going up. Even if you have to "hire in" cleaning help, etc., aging-in-place is a whole lot cheaper than a nursing home. Of course, that's a nursing home -- not assisted living. Some communities here have gotten so far as declaring that first cousins aren't close enough family members to live together. That particular case was a household of grandmother and her two granddaughters. After grandma's death, the two cousins inherited the home and continued to live there but the local government was trying to force them to leave. I've never heard of this, but I don't see ... - How it's enforceable. If I let you come live in my house, who's going to say no? Assuming, of course, we're both law abiding citizens, who can say what happens inside my house? And if "they" do say no, how are they going to make you leave my house? - How it's possible, given society's widespread acceptance of unmarried couples living together as if married /though not married? I mean, if you can live with a guy you just met last week, why is it not okay to live with your cousin? - How it's possible, given that young people have always looked for roommates as a way of keeping their rent low? Comments (25)Used properly filled with lush plants, this feature would be swoon-worthy! I love some of the inspiration pictures above and the idea of hanging plants. I hope you decide to keep it! There are plenty of plants that don't require a lot of care if they are sited properly as yours would be. I didn't have a green thumb before I was married but managed to keep a ficus, umbrella plant, and some other palm tree looking plants that I don't know the names of, alive and happy on mostly benign neglect and a bit of water every couple of weeks or so. I've had some for 26 years and they are huge now under my husband's care. If you're intimidated, maybe get some professional help for recommendations and to get started. Comments (24)David Ray, I didn't realize your windows had no paint-able exterior surface, that seems unusual to me so the best I can do is recommend you talk to a local paint store expert, or perhaps take a closeup pic of your windows and post it to the paint and/or windows forums here. edited to add: as I was walking my dog today I passed a house that has windows probably like yours. I'd say if there's not an exterior surface to paint, don't start one! And until someday when you might replace your windows, you need shutters to give a bit of definition -- so I take back my initial advice to get rid of them :-) Sigrid, I think you're correct in that basically none of the renderings posted here are meant to be planting diagrams. Instead they give the homeowner an idea of what could be possible -- actual plantings need to be worked out with local landscapers (or by the homeowner if they have the desire to DIY).
