I have...and it is painful as heck!...I could not even stand the weight of a sheet on it.

Make a note of what he ate and drank yesterday. Gout (I think) is triggered by food, typically. Chicken livers, seafood and dark ale for my DH. And, Oh Yes, very painful....touching with a sheet is very painful.

My dad had it a few times, and yes, very painful.

It is from rich food apparently (though Dad was thin). Once he got it after eating some spicy sausages.

Foot problems are diabolical because they muck up the way we walk. So frustrating.

If it's gout, a blood test can validate that diagnosis because his uric
acid level will be high...over the normally acceptable high range
figure.

On the other hand, it could be arthritis. As odd as
that sounds...it's a distinct possibility. I have it in my feet and
like Phoggie noted...when it's bad...it's really bad. A sheet can
cause extreme misery. There have been times when it was so painful that
a breeze of air seemed too much to tolerate.

A third option is
that it may be circulatory related. I don't know his age or weight but
this option is one that shouldn't be ignored.

Obviously, there
are more than a couple of options to consider. You're wise, Jewels, to
take him to a doctor for an evaluation now. I think if he had "tweaked"
it to the point that it's that painful...he'd have some outer
proof...i.e. a bruise...to show for the accident.

I thought gout was causing toe pain for me so I did get a checkup and found out that the abundance of hops in crafted triple IPA was probably the cause. I haven't had an IPA for several weeks and no more pain. My daughter is an oncology nurse and she has warned me that consuming high alcohol content in IPA is probably causing the toe pain because my kidneys are busy excreting alcohol instead of uric acid. Sometimes it's my index finger.

Cherry juice will help this week-end and then have the blood test - I have taken 300 mg allopurinol every day since I had my first bout with gout three years ago and have never had another. Thank goodness as it was so painful!

I had it once and it was excruciating. Ibuprofen or tylenol do help a little.

He went to the Minor Emergency and was home within an hour. His regular dr. was on duty, which was nice. He is treating him for gout, but they did not do a blood test. The dr. gave him two prescriptions that I will pick up soon. I'm also going to pick up some cherry juice too.

Just be clarify, don't buy the kid stuff sweet cherry juice. You need the sour cherry or Monmoracy cherry juice, 100 per cent pure, no sugar or water added. Trader Joes has one on the shelve and Indian Summer brand has one also. Also look in the produce section of the store were they may have some cooling.

Daily cherry supplements are what I take.

And keep a prescription handy for pain if I experience another gout episode. Haven't needed it since I started on the supplements, for a year now.

Shoot,, I bought some of the kids juice that was 100% juice. I will buy him some of the other though.

I have high uric acid levels so experience gout often but I don't get the pain in my toes, I get it on the side of my left foot usually, my ankle and my knee. The pain is excruciating. The last time I had a bout of gout was 2 months ago and the pain was so severe I stood in the middle of the living room for an hour not being able to move because I could not take a step. I know exactly what caused me to have that episode. The week before I had eaten asparagus, cauliflower, shrimp, mushrooms more than once and i cooked with beer. All those can be my trigger foods. Healthy food is my trigger, all high in purines. I can usually get away with eating one of those foods without anything happening but I tend to forget eating more than one will cause me pain.

I have no idea what triggered this for my husband. He is a pretty healthy man and does not drink any type of alcohol. My brother drinks alot of iced tea and heard that was a trigger for him, but my dh rarely drinks tea. I'm not sure what he ate the night before this happened.

It doesn't have to be the night before. The crystals build up which is what causes the pain. I don't drink either, for me it is the veggies I eat. I had 5 shrimp the week before, ate pureed cauliflower, ate a bunch of asparagus during the same week and a package of mushrooms. My Doctor told me I just have chronic high uric acid in my blood as does my sister. Before I was diagnosed years ago I went to the Doctor because I thought I had skin cancer. I had these black crusty round spots on the top of my left thigh. I think my Doctor called it tophi or something like that. They finally went away after I started taking the medication. My uric acid level at that time was so high I had 2 Doctors call me after I had the blood test to come back in right away.
