band roses growing in 1g pot
Comments (8)It's SOOOO..... hard to wait, but I feel if you do, you will be glad you did. Hot, miserable weather is just around the corner, and roses with small root sytems struggle with the summer stress, even if irrigated every day. Sometimes they never get over it. I've tried all sorts of things, and the roses I left in pots until they filled out at least a 2 gallon pot (3 gallon is better) have become fabulous bushes. If you can be patient, it would be wise to get the bed prepped now, and top it all with a nice layer of mulch, unless you are going to plant some "temporary" flowers first. What you can then do is either sink the pots in the ground a little bit, or put bricks down for your pots to sit on. I bought cheap pavers from Home Depot to set my pots on. The air circulates better. That way the roses can grow a good root system, and you can move the pots around in the area you want to plant them to get a feel for what arrangement pleases you. Comments (3)I have to leave my bands outside - my greenhouse wont hold them all [however, I have several really special ones from Vintage that I do take inside]. Our temps can fluctuate here in east Texas - earlier in the week it was nearly 80 - now its in the mid 30's. Our winters usually can go down to 25 for a few hours occasionally. Mine have wintered fine - although I worry. In spring, they revive and leaf out beautifully. Since you only have a few, what can it hurt to bring them in the garage? Some of my smaller bands that cannot be replaced are going inside - then out again when its warmer. Really wish I had a huge greenhouse where I could house them......I always worry when they look like sticks - I do top the gallon pots with mulch, don't know if this helps. Would like to hear how others overwinter their bands....... Judith...See MoreRepot plants in 1 gallon pots?
Comments (3)Hi Iso!!!! I just wanted to pop in and say that i would leave them in the 1 gallon pots. Since they were just rooted and the trees haven't grown that much, the root system probably doesn't need to be repotted or even potted up. So i would not disturb the roots at this time. Let them thrive in the same container and enjoy this season to grow and be happy trees. I have several trees in one gallon containers and also some in 3 and 5 gallon containers. The large trees will be root pruned and placed back in the same container. I will not go larger than a 5 gallon container due to having to bring them in every season. Hope you are doing well... We are having some warm temps here on the East Coast and i did bring out some... : ) trees. (50 or so) to enjoy the sunshine and the warm temps. It is just amazing to see how happy they are to get some sunshine right now...im sure that i will bring them in again next week, but for now ... I will probably be doing this for the next month or so..Last year i think i carried them in and out at least 5 times..The things we do for our trees!!! LOL.. But, i love it!!! Hope this helps.. They will be happy left alone in those containers and will continue to grow and become beautiful trees for you!!! Take care Iso!!! Laura...See More1-gallon pots big enough?
Comments (4)If you're stuck, for what ever reason of space or financial constraints, on pot size, the addition of one of those saucer thingies that hold the drippings can be a useful tool. By watering the plant from the top and letting the excess drip through and stay there, this can keep the plant going much longer and far healthier, and depending on the size of the plant and relative humidity, it can allow an impressive sized plant in a small pot. Couple of caveats, it has to be a big plant that goes through a lot of moisture, or you'll end up with a stinking mess. Also, a one gal pot is still pretty small. I do this with 5 gal and up, usually for egg plant, which transpire a huge amount of moisture....See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
