Water Softeners: Salt versus Salt free

homeguy

My salt softener tank is leaking and I have been told (by the plumber and the water softener company), it should be replaced because it is 16 years old. I want to decide between a salt free and salt system. My water comes from wells, where there is natural filtration through sandstone and limestone. Fluoride is not added to the water and infrequently chlorine is added to the storage tanks, according to the water company. It is very hard, 27 grains per gallon. What are the pros and cons of both systems? I am also considering a filtration system and was unsure if I should do whole house or just at the sink and which type? Any advice would be appreciated.
