In addition to ones already listed: Nevada Barr, her heroine is a National Parks Ranger Stuart Woods - only those where the protagonist is a female former sheriff. These are set in a locale in Florida very close to where I live (Central Florida, east coast) Dorothy L Sayers - Lord Peter Whimsy Colin Dexter - he wrote a series featuring Inspector Morse. The public TV stations aired numerous movies based on Morse, on the Mystery series.

I like my name now. It's not too common, but not that unusual, either. As a child, I wished it were more common because I wanted things with my name on them and they just weren't readily available. You know what I mean - those things, like key chains, shoelaces, zipper pulls, stickers, etc. None came with my name on them. That made me vow that, when I had children, I'd always give them a name that wasn't so uncommon that they'd not be able to have personalized cheapo items!!! But - I like my name now. It's fine. From what my mom and dad told me, they were going to name me something that was a contraction of their 2 names. It was pretty and I'd kind of like to have that now, as it would be an honor to carry their names. But - in the end, they chose a name they loved and that suits me fine.

I do like a series, but I also like an author who writes stand alone books that bring in the same characters from a different viewpoint. One of my favorite authors is Tabitha King (wife of Stephen). Five of her seven novels are set in fictional Nodd's Ridge, Maine. While each is a stand alone book, there is a sense of continuity as new characters are introduced that expand or complete the histories of previous characters and allusions are made to events in previous Nodd's Ridge novels. Events and characters are seen from different viewpoints. The first book I read was "One on One" which was written in 1993. The main character is Samuel Styles. "Pearl" was written in 1988 and is about Samuel's step-mother. "The Book of Reuben" was written in 1994 and the main character is Samuel's father. "Caretakers" was written in 1983 from the viewpoint of a caretaker in Nodd's Ridge. The order in which read makes no difference. There are amusing references in Tabitha's novels to the works of her husband. For instance, she includes a note in the afterword of "One on One" that the state basketball finals against Castle Rock depicted in her novel took place before the destruction of the fictional Castle Rock portrayed in her husband's "Needful Things." Another favorite author is Maeve Binchy whose books include references to characters and events in previous books. It has a "coming home" feel to recognize characters and places and events.

I picked up an historical novel from my Retirement Village library with no return date as I am having to read slowly, still without my proper reading glasses. I have finally been able to get tested by an optician after a sudden Lockdown delayed my second eye operation and new ones are being made and on their way from Germany as soon as possible. I have to attend my youngest GD's wedding on Easter Saturday and would like the glasses by then. The book is "The Boleyn Inheritance" by Philippa Gregory. It is written by three Tudor women so is easy to put down between chapters. I seem to recall RP'ers being rather dismissive of this author on the grounds of accuracy, I think? She included a chapter about Anne of Cleves and her brother I thought distasteful and unnecessary! I nearly dumped the book then but kept going as the rest was quite interesting.
