douglas fir in the south
Comments (16)Quite a few years ago, perhaps more than 10, I was shocked to see an oddly "boreal" looking conifer near Tyson's Corner Mall in Virginia. On examining the cones I was sure it was a douglas fir, because of the distinctive look. It had an open conical form, somewhat like the picture of the tree above. Not quite as tall, maybe only 20', but healthy looking. I kept thinking I'd look for it again, but, seriously, malls are maddening enough just trying to shop at them, I'm certainly not going to search for a tree on its grounds. Also that mall has had so much work done it could very well be gone. It was planted on a steep bank, which might explain why it hadn't died of summer drowning, which I suspect is a probably cause of death for them....See MoreTransplanting Douglas Fir
Comments (8)If you are moving the trees a short distance in the same yard I dont think there is a need for Ken Adrian's Balling and Burlapping. If you make the hole soggy there is a high probability that the roots will end up BELOW the grade when the thing dries out - and the trees will not last long that way. No need to water the holes until the trees are actually in the ground and backfilled....See MoreSanding/Refinishing 100 year old Douglas Fir
Comments (6)STOP SANDING! If there is ever any doubt that theres lead get it tested. Most big box stores sells instant tests for lead. It will show the pressence of lead. Its not a comprehensive test. If there is lead you need it removed by a professional. Not doing so can cause serious health risks. With the flaking you are getting i suggest you hire a pro to take a better look at the floor. While 100 yr old fir can be sanded it does need to be examined. Some times old wood if not taken care of properly over the years is just a lost cause. Not saying your floor is shot. I have no way of knowing without visually examining it. But at this stage most highly recommended pros will at the very least come out and give you a bid....See MoreStaining Douglas Fir doors - Need advice!
Comments (7)It will be worth your time to do some research on staining and finishing, especially fir. For instance, an oil based finish---like varnish will create an amber tint---very often just what people want. Woods like fir and pine often need a preconditioner to even out stain color. Stains or dyes can be thinned to change the deepness of the color. Often testing is the only way to find the right stain/dye/finish combination. Buying some similar lumber and doing the full range testing means the final process you choose will be worth looking at for years....See MoreEmbothrium
