I love white shirts, and I've often proselytized here about them. I like something fitted, not see through, no ironing, and my own fave is 3/4 sleeves, preferably with a hidden button placket.

The latest one I bought is actually Lands end (below). I also have some from Neiman Marcus and Chico's

I'm love the non-iron white shirts. Was sad when Jones of NY went out of business because they made nice ones. My most recent is a Foxcroft brand found at Nordstroms. (Foxcroft can also be purchased on-line at its own website and other stores).

Many of the ones I try on are so thin you can see elements of your bra through them.

& I do prefer 100% cotton for whites, if possible. Everything else seems to get dingy & cannot easily be treated for stains.

Even with a nude bra some white shirts are too thin. I don't like when I can see the top of my pants through my shirt (if I wear one untucked).

I find it just looks nicer to see just the shirt, rather than the shirt and all the various things underneath ... See through has its place but unintentional see thru, to me, just means cheap fabric

My favorite white shirt is the last remaining Jones New York shirt in my closet. I have a blue one also. Nice crisp fabric, perfect length, three quarter sleeves, looks good with navy, black and khaki, collar perfect to wear with cardigans or blazers. When it goes I don't know what I will replace it with. Every time I wear it someone gives me a sincere, spontaneous compliment!

Maybe you can find a tailor or seamstress to copy it?

To bring cotton or linen back to white

Soak in hot water and oxy clean overnight and then rinse well and hang for a day in the sun. When my friend went to Mexico city for a movie shoot, he said all the linens hanging to dry in the sun were the whitest he'd ever seen. The old way used to be to wash and rinse all the soap out until the rinse water was clear and then spread the white item over grass. Something about the grass whitens the cloth. Chlorine bleach yellows whites so don't add that when you wash. Washing whites separately also helps them stay pure white. Some dry cleaning chemicals may yellow white natural fiber cloth.

I don't know about no iron blends. I prefer the natural fibers because they breathe and get softer with use. I like to have a good weight of cloth as well that does not reveal seams and lingerie. One thing I like to do is change out the buttons to make a plain shirt a little special. Some of the men's shirts are made with heavenly Egyptian cotton and woven on special looms and then finished so they are silky soft. I like to cut them up and make new ones using patterns made from shirts I loved but needed replacing. Sometime, try on a high end gentleman's shirt. They are some of the most beautiful cottons to feel next to your skin.

You have to be careful in the market though in a crisp white shirt with black or navy below. One time in a supermarket, an irate customer yelled at me for minutes before I could get a word in that I was not the store manager.

Brooks Bros. no- iron is the one I like best. Always looks crisp. I have to size up on theirs. They are pricier than many but a value when you consider cost per wear because of their versatility. I buy mine from the outlet nearby.

I happened to be in Sears so tried on the Land's End. While the fabric was nice, the fit was not good on me.

Those are almost a uniform for me these days. Alternately I wear all black. Just so much easier.

The nicest ones are quite old but still excellent. The newest ones are from Land's End -- several different styles -- just find the one that fits best. But so many brands make them it's just a question of what fits and looks great.

All of mine are very white. I wash them very warm or hot with Persil perls. Excellent results. Tide with Bleach is also very good on these.

Nothing beats a white camp shirt, on a woman OR a man! I like the breast pockets to have flaps with buttons. Tucked in or worn 'out' it looks great. I only have one from a shop I worked in years ago, if anyone remembers Karen Austen. I need to start looking for a new one since my is wearing very thin.

My favorite white button down blouse is a Carol Little from Marshall's or TJ's. I'll probably cry when I have to replace it!

I went into TJMaxx yesterday and came across a Jones NY white shirt. The fabric was pretty decent but they used french seams so you could see the seams all around the shirt. I tried it on anyway and it fit everywhere except across the bust. But as I'm trying on all these white shirts, while I think the look is sharp on others, with my coloring, it really does me no favors.

I read about this shop online. Meant to have the best white shirts. I have never ordered from them but it's a pretty cool site with a blog and sizing fit info. The Great White Shirt was mentioned as a fav. Made by Claridge and King 100% cotton.

What is a camp shirt?

GAG on the white shirt. I wore a uniform for too long. They are all too too revealing. They are only good for under vest or sweater.

I'd have to agree that the camp shirt shone is more prison looking garb. That is not what I know to be a camp shirt. Try putting 'women's camp shirt' under the search for Lands End from the very first picture above - I think you might recognize it as a basic staple in lots of women's wardrobes. (Sorry don't know how to add a picture)

In the far northeast, that is not a camp shirt, and I'm frankly not sure what kind of shirt it is. The model below is what I would call a camp shirt, the hallmarks are a notched collar and the ability to button it all the way up. Often has vented sides and a finished hem for wearing out.

This is what I consider to be a camp shirt style. The one showed is from Orvis. sometimes they will have 2 pockets on the front.

Okay, I still have no idea of what a camp shirt is. Does everyone have a different idea? Never heard of camp shirt.

Hmmm, thought I had posted a pic, sorry. But I think the beige one in mdln's post is the easiest to see the notched collar that means "camp shirt" to me.
