Growing Tomatoes

Good and bad on the same day

I checked the info at this site and some others. Have narrowed it down to septoria or the virus caused by thrips.

The plants showing the most damage are local garden store purchases. I bought them because of the varieties available. Many were leggy and weak. They seem to be functioning as magnets for disease. I am inclined to rip them up and replace them with the fine stout double stemmed big beefs from the bbs store. What would you do? I also plan on weekly or bi weekly regimen of daconil.

on a positive note, I believe I have first fruit set on a Cherokee purple. As is typical in life, the worst and the best today, even in my small tomato patch.

It could be Septoria but its spots are usually raised on the leaf surface sort of like bubbles and I can't blow the pics up enough to tell for sure. It could also be Bacterial Speck and bacterial diseases respond better to copper based fungicides. What has the weather been like cool and wet (fungus) or hot and wet (bacterial)?

One other possibility is flea beetles but I think it is a little too early for them even in Charleston. But given the weather this year they could arrive early. Look for them - tiny black hopping beetles - as the shotgun pattern of the damage is classic for them. Of course treatment for them is very different.

Personally I wouldn't pull the plants yet. I'd strip off as much of the affected foliage as possible and spray the appropriate treatment and then continue to monitor.

Thanks for detailed response. The weather has been mostly cool, clear and sunny, humidity not too bad. I will look for the beetles and start daconil, even if preventative. Thanks again.

Sorry you had a stinker of a day. I remember the day we went from having four cars to having one car in one day! Fortunately all due to breakdowns, not accidents, so you have to count your blessings. By the time I got a call that #3 had broken down, there was nothing left to do but laugh.

Spider plants are one of the most forgiving plants when it comes to playing in their soil. They have huge roots that grow forever and continue to grow when disturbed. It's all your preference whether or not you want to pot them up separately or with the mother plant. If there is room in the pot, there is no reason not to unless the mother plant is diseased or suffering from root problems or you want to give one to everybody in your neighborhood. If you don't, you'll end up with hundreds of plants. You can also root them in a separate pot and when it's time to pot up the mother plant add the babies back in with it.

Have said it before LOL...P&Gstopped listing Sodium TripolyPhosphate several years ago on Mexican Ariel. They had hoped it would stop the US housewives of seeking it out if we thought it was no longer in it..doesn't much matter as its gone now. I am not pleased about this but what is...is. I have enough stockpiled that I won't be without it, but lately I only use it on really heavily soiled clothes. Jody I'm glad you found some as I know you really like it. On second thought, I will try to get you a better photo. The affected leaves are in a zip lock in the house. I will see if this iPad camera can do close- ups.
