Table behind the sofa / couch used to display plants

I was having difficulty trying to find a place for my small potted houseplants. So I decided to place a long narrow table behind my sofa and use that as a display area. The table sits next to the window, so the plants receive lots of natural light too.

Pictures below:

I will be painting the plant saucers the same pale pink color, havent had a change to do that yet. Also the pots in the back (near the window), will either paint them the same color or another color....not sure yet.

I like this idea. But, I think I would prefer taller pots and higher plants for your particular situation.

I would cluster them in little groupings rather than lining them up in rows.

Very cute. Be careful if people sit on that couch, though. I've had table lamps that go directly behind one of our couches. They've gotten bumped pretty severely when someone stretches backwards or puts their arm around their sweetie.

Absolutely adorable. Bumping is a potential problem so you'll have to be wstchful

No firm rule, but it should be properly proportioned. For example, this sofa was 90" wide, and we positioned a sofa table that extended just until the sofa back began to curve. In this case the top was 62" long. 48" would have been too short. This picture doesn't illustrate the sofa table we used. This one illustrated is too tall and too long.

Different table please. Not this one. Too cluttered behind a sofa anyway. If you want multiple shelf display? Do low bookcase with a solid back, and limit height to back frame of sofa.

Bookcases are up! Or, at least two of them are ☺️ I ordered three, which would exactly fill this wall. But now I’m thinking maybe two is better: if I want the sofa centered on the fireplace (which I’m pretty sure I do), then the third might make the walkway from the living to the dining part of the room feel pinched. What do you think? I have lots of great art waiting to be hung, and I’m thinking maybe using the space on either side of the shelves for a painting or two, rather than adding the third set of shelves? Please excuse the messy table 😆 I‘d also be grateful for any thoughts about the styling — I put this together late at night, with lots of sentimental treasure that have been hanging out in inappropriate places around the house. I have other spots to display things, though, so if anything is out of place, it can be relocated (except for the baskets — there’s one of those for each of my kids for homeschool work; they like to work in the dining room lately, and I’m happy to give them space as long as everything goes back in the basket when they’re done). I think a 60” - 72” console with ottomans or baskets under it, and a lamp or lamps would definitely work ... would give the illusion of more size and take the eye away from the divisions. Your current table actually mirrors the back lines. I like sofa tables with lamps in big open floor plans like yours, as it helps define the rooms. Obviously not a sofa as long as yours, but for an example: I honestly wouldn’t worry about the 3/4 size rule in this case. In fact, I don’t think I’d even want one that long for your room, especially with shelves. Way too hectic/busy (and forced).

I like the groupings idea. I am still shopping for lamps or something else to place on the table, will try the groupings then.

I have a bunch of orchids on a console table between sofa and window So far, no bumping off, even with dog using it as her perch.

Didnt think about bumping, so far I have had no problems, except for my curious toddler..who likes to touch the leaves.

Great spot for plants. I would definitely try them in groupings as someone suggested instead of lining them up in a straight line. More interesting plus it's free to try!! Good luck.

i would probably pull the sofa away from the table an inch or 2 if you have the room...

Yes, I can definitely do that. Our rug is a little bit smaller, so will be pulling the sofa in a little bit. Right now it doesnt have those grip furniture pads on the feet, so the sofa keeps sliding back.

I love what you've done here. I agree about trying them clustered, and perhaps bring in a couple of other items - small statuary, perhaps? - to fill in and add a bit more interest to the display. I predict those plants will thrive there. I've been very pleasantly surprised at how mine have done, on the sill in front of a glass block window. They're growing like, well, weeds! (But they're much prettier.) :-)

Thanks!, yes right now they are just small plantlets, separated them and I am sure once they grow bigger and taller....the look the display will be ever changing.

@razamatazzy...the sofa, we bought a few months ago at Macys for around $600, its the Chloe velvet tufted sofa. It feels lovely and doesnt stain easily. The reviews are really good, so far I have had no problems, though its only been a few months for me.
