Creatures of Habit

Kathy_t set me to wondering when she mentioned on the "What would you choose?" thread that she would be sad not being able to read new books.

It probably wouldn't bother me a great deal.

Do you look first for the newest releases when you consider what you want to read? Or do you wait until the hubbub dies down -- for months, years, even decades -- when it looks like a book will have staying power?

When I was a kid, I chose my library books randomly, not caring whether they were new or so old that nearly everybody had already forgotten them. Except for a few series books, such as the Nancy Drew mysteries, and the romantic suspense books of Mary Stewart, I didn't look specifically for the latest releases. I often read series books out of order. I wasn't particular about genres, either. I was eclectic in my taste, but already I had an inkling that I preferred nonfiction over fiction and my habits were forming.

What about you? What are the reasons you think you developed your particular habits? Of course, I would like to know some of the titles of the books that set you on your path. :-)
