New house, random flowers popping up

Hi all,

I'm making progress identifying the random pretty things that are blooming here in my new house (zone 7). The previous owner was a gardener and now that spring is here, things are popping out of the ground. Can you help me identify some?

A - hard, woody stem, looks like it was a shrub that was cut to the ground. It flowered over spring break, last week of March some time. Buds were dark pink.

B - No flower yet. We will begin mowing the lawn soon and I wanted to know if this is worth mowing around until a possible bloom. I don't want to transplant during a sensitive time if it's something worth saving. Stems in the middle have a lot of soft hairs (close-up below)

C - Is it bugle weed?

D - Just a bunch of leaves for now, but seems to be spreading a lot, and fast.

E - Yellow flower mixed in with the old day lilies I transplanted from one part of yard to another. What is the yellow flower? The leaves on the right go with it.

F - My neighbor has this blooming and it's only the first week of April. Is it a type of daisy?

C is dead nettle

A is Skimmia japonica.

B is unknown to me. A weed...

C is Lamium purpurea.

D is Zantedeschia aethicopia. Some cultivar I can't name.

E is maybe Stylophorum diphyllum. I don't think I've ever seen the plant in person so it's hard to tell.almost certainly something in papaveraceae.

F is an anemone. Possibly A. blanda.

In which part of the country do you reside?

Most definitely Fall Crocus. They'll be gone quick. Dig up the bulbs and plant them under a shady tree. No care needed and they're a great reminder that spring is close this time of year as you just found. They're often used for plant timing in gardens. Don't get rid of them.

Thanks everyone for the collective effort! I'm thrilled to have peonies in the yard. But don't they have to have full sun? They seem to be in an at least part shady location... (side of the house and under an oak tree). Well, I guess I'll see how they'll do this summer.

Mark, most peonies have the red foliage when they first emerge in early spring. The leaves will gradually turn green. Determining the color of the blooms to come would be impossible at this stage. I think I'd try digging first, that's pretty close to "good" plants. If you get a hole dug and still see root in it, then I'd do some boiling water, just right in the hole, slowly, steadily. You don't want to cook the other plants.

D. I believe is Arum italicum.

B is greater celandine, Chelidonium majus, a weed. The fuzzy thing that is extending is the flower stalk, and if it blooms and goes to seed you will have it everywhere. The sap will stain, so wear gloves and have something ready to contain it if that bothers you.

I agree with D being Arum italicum. Although lovely, I have read that it spreads fast enough to be considered a pest/weed in many areas.

F looks like Anemone blanda to me as well. Nice spring ephemeral, so if you plant some, keep track of where so you don't dig it up by accident since they disappear in summer. Available in pink, blue-purple, as well as white.

I thought about chelidonium for B and thought it just was too hirsute. I could go for it though. E might be the same... Same family. You're all right about D being arum. I always forget about that because it's not common around here at all.

B and E: chelidonium majus -- hardy perennial and prodigious self-seeder. I just dug out every returner from last season and will be dealing with new seedlings...forever. As suggested above, proceed with caution (nice language for: get rid of it ASAP).

E is not Chelidonium imo. Looks like Stylophorum diphyllum. Wood Poppy.

I think Floral is right; flowers look fuller than Chelidonium, and foliage slightly different shape and less fuzzy. The Chelidonium that grows in my yard is consistently fuzzy, though not always quite as fuzzy as photo B.

After all of your help, I thought it was funny that B and E looked like they were cousins. I suspect B is the weed one (celandine major) and E is the native one (wood poppy), based on some other photos I've seen on the internet that closely resemble what I see in my yard. In any case, sounds like both self-seed very very readily and that may not be a good thing in my smallish yard.

This forum is really incredible - I very much appreciate all of you offering your ideas and discussions. It's really really helpful.

Agree that D is Arum italicum var. 'Marmorataum', a bit of a thug but lovely for its wimter foliage. Several other varieties are named with different leaf markings. E is Stylophorum diphyllum (Wood poppy) A fantastic woodland native Watch this one after the bloom drops as when the seedpods open up, they are extremely attractive in their own right. You can easily move seedlings of this and it's too nice to get rid of.

Billie, here's how to add location and zone to your profile so it posts automatically with your name:

Go to Your Houzz in the upper right of every page, click Edit Profile, and on the left side click advanced settings. Well down the advanced settings page is a blank labeled Climate Zone for Garden Forums along with a link to find your zone.

If you add info on your state or the nearest large city you will get even better information since zone only relates to average coldest winter temperatures.

Then return to the top of the page and click Done Editing.
