We offer rare and unique fruiting and medicinal plants, fruit trees, herbs, wild succulent gardens, house plants, handcrafted ceramic planters, and more. All of our tropical fruiting plants can be grown in small or large containers in northern zones or planted outside in warmer climates.

For each plant or product purchased, our Giving Gardens Program donates plants to help grow school and community gardens in your neighborhood. Empower your community by sharing what you sow!

They're seeded here - have to be sure not to accidentally bite down on one of the small stony seeds - you could break a tooth. Flavor more reminiscent of pawpaw than persimmon, to me. Famine food - I eat 'em, but don't go out of my way to get a lot of 'em. Massage 'em, tear out the stem, suck out the pulp, spit out the seeds. In a discussion here, some years back, one poster indicated that when he ate them, they made his heart race. I never got that effect, but proceed cautiously... When getting to more significant plantings, local considerations amplify the spacing considerations that you've already found you needed to tweak for the short-term crops and your ultimate goals can point to radically differnet planting practices. Several of the fruit crops you mentioned have specialized site preparation needs, training, and growth habits that are addressed specifically for that crop in a way not possible in a mixed bed of annual veggies, flowers, and herbs. Some principles do stay the same: lots of compost, mulch, and trying to get the most fruit in as small a maintained space as possible. But its going to take researching each crop to see how to do that in your situation. For fruits there is no better place than GW's on Fruit forum to tap into brainstorming after you've researched the basics and read some old posts to get ideas. For fruit trees, that usually translates to using semi-dwarfs, in extremely confined spaces you can get a larger variety with a slight production loss by planting two trees with similar growth rates and habits in the same hole. Grapes have a variety of trellising arrangements, depending on variety, climate, and asthetic concerns. For blackberries and raspberries, a narrow bed isolated from other beds is recommended.

Leona, what exactly translates into a "Tropical" for this thread? Do you mean just the exotic stuff like Cherimoya, Sapotes, Dragon Fruit? Or do low-chill fruit trees count? My most productive, easy to grow, least problematic fruiting plants are my low chill Apples/Peaches/Nectarines/Plums/Blueberries/Strawberries and Blackberries. The only issues with them is thievery by squirrels. I've had very good luck with Figs, Mangoes, Loquats, Barbados Cherry, Miracle Fruit, and many Citrus. My Bananas grow well and look good, but rarely fruit. I suspect I don't feed them enough. Papayas and Cattley Guavas are super easy to grow here, but all the fruit are ruined by fruit flies, so I can't call them a success. If I had to pick just one, I'd waver between Persian Lime or Tropic Snow Peach. Both are superb! Many of my more exotic trees are new, so I can't call them successes yet(G). Lisa
