Type of hydrangea?

My new neighbor gardens (woot!) and she's offered me some shrubs that are left over from a batch her father, a landscape architect, pulled out of a clients garden and donated to her. She told me they're hydrangea but she doesn't know what type. Any ideas? The chain link fence in the photo is 4' high so I'm guessing they'll get taller than that.

This is the row she's put in along our shared fence. She's handing the extras over bare root this evening and they pretty much have to go in the ground right away, so any clues would be great. Thanks!

My guess based on the leaves is H. macrophylla, aka, mophead or lacecap. Will need some afternoon shade. Up here in hot Texas, I try to give them shade starting at 11am to prevent sun scorch to the leaves during the hottest part of the summer.

Thanks! One of mine had a dead flower. I'm pretty sure you're right and they're bigleaf mopheads, assuming they're all the same type.

We're right on the water so the hottest we ever get is mid 80s. I put three in a dryer area that gets sun til about 1pm at the latest and the other three in a moist area that gets sun til 3pm. Both are on slopes so they should drain well. Hopefully they'll be happy there.

Depends what sort of a Zone 8, esh_ga. In my zone 8/9 they are extremely common and easy to grow. PNW has zone 8 areas, I believe, and I am pretty sure lilac grows there too. We don't know where the OP is situated or even if the pic was taken where they live.

Many tend to be large shrubs so it would be hard to tell if the ones in the picture get no taller than that or if the owner prunes them to keep them that size. There are some dwarf type hydrangeas like Pia, Hornli, etc. that you could check but they may grow too low for the hostas that you plan to get. Measure the heigth that you require, the height of the hostas and then look for hydrangea macrophyllas advertised to grow no higher that you desire. Make sure they will do well in your zone too. By the way, height estimates are estimates so be prepared to prune now and then if the shrubs get too tall or wide. Examples: Pia, Blue Billow, Blue Deckle, Hornli, Masja, Marechal Foch, Shirofuji (white blooms), etc

It won't survive very long as a houseplant, either. Plants that grow outdoors in temperate areas (even though not fully hardy) are not well adapted to indoor conditions - too little light, too low humidity, etc. They'll survive and struggle on with reasonable care but they won't thrive and often just decline. Better to grow it as a containerized plant - in a properly sized container - outside, only bringing it in for winter protection when it goes dormant for the winter. And by "in" I mean somewhere where it remains cold but not freezing - a garage, cellar or unheated basement.

I did my time in California with 105F summers. There's a reason we moved up here! It was so difficult to keep anything alive down there. This place is the garden of Eden.

I hear you. I had a good time when I visited Olympic Natl Park eons ago. Loved the forest-y look everywhere I went. Just hope some of those earthquakes and volcanoes stay dormant. I admit the volcano/mountains were impressive to look at though... but hydrangeas and we all can do without all that lava business. Hee hee hee.

Well happily I live on an island that's not a volcano. So we might get earthquakes or ash, but we're unlikely to get lava. :)
