Large yard, lots of shade, where to start

I posted here years ago with the old Garden Web...I wish I could find that thread. I have a large yard (at least for my area). It's probably about 60X50. There are 7 trees in the yard, all but two of which are evergreen (a few pines and a few spruce). The deciduous tree is a buckeye in the middle of the yard. Right now there is so little grass, it seems like a good time to start making it into a beautiful shade garden. I am not a novice to gardening, I have planted and experimented with a ton of plants in my sunny front yard. My style is definitely cotttage. I can talk for hours about sun perennials, but I am a novice to the shade, besides the obvious hostas and heuchera. Can someone offer some suggestions? I will post a photo of the yard. I am thinking of doing some gravel paths. I am definitely on a budget, but I have resources for cheap plants. Any ideas are welcome. (Note: the crooked tree near the garage is getting cut down and I would like to do some kind of patio in that area.
