That will work or you can also use empty buckets turned upside down . make sure the drain plug is out or drill more holes so the extra water can drain

I will be planting some here in NJ in another week. They transplant best when daytime temperatures are in the 60's here. They will survive a light frost if not blossoming.

The temperatures you cite are not a problem. If you can scoop up enough loose soil to pot up your new strawberries, transplanting can then wait until more favorable gardening weather.

There are three main types of strawberries, june bearing, ever bearing, and day neutral. June bearing makes its only crop in the spring, from March till May. Ever bearing makes a crop in the spring and another smaller crop in the fall. Day neutral are suppose to bear in the spring through fall. In Texas they produce some in spring and again in the fall. Summers are just too hot. If you can give me the name of the variety you are going to plant I can tell you which type you have. Do you get morning or evening sun. Morning is better but you don't really have any choice. You will want a well drained potting mix (not soil). Strawberries are shallow rooted so you only need a container that is 8 to 10 inches deep, Wider is better than deeper. I would fertilize with a complete fertilizer such as miracle grow. Apply with water at a rate of 1/2 teaspoon per gallon every two weeks. If you use Osmocote realize that it will only last 1/2 as long as it states (4 month only last 2 months). The coating breaks down quicker in hot weather. Water with plain water in between, making sure to water until water comes out the bottom. If you only water a little at a time salts will build up. Some people flush once a week with water to keep the salts down. Strawberries like moisture but do not over water in the winter. If you are able to grow strawberries through the summer you will be ready to move up to figs, blackberries, blueberries, and maybe even raspberries. It really isn't that hard if you are able to tend to them every day during the summer.
