Floating row covers?
Comments (4)"Just be aware that IF an aphid manages to sneak in underneath, you will have an aphid population explosion underneath the covers." That, unfortunately, has been a frequent occurrence for me when using Agribon 15. I use it as a cover for isolation cages, (when growing peppers for seed) and have had some serious infestations. Haven't figured out yet whether the aphids get on the plants during hardening off (in a small greenhouse) or whether they can find holes in the very loose weave of the AG 15. Fortunately for me, I have a very robust population of predatory insects... the Agribon actually protects the aphids from them. All I have to do is leave the cover open, and within a week or two, lady bugs, syrphid fly larvae, and yellow jackets will eliminate the aphids....See MoreUsing floating row cover with a trellis
Comments (3)How about a hot glue gun? you would have to cut it off, but it would certainly take less time. Or you could hot glue velcro to the cloth and then it would be re-usable, and you could do it inside so you're neighbors cant watch....See MoreAny exp with floating row covers with toms?
Comments (6)Of all the crops I've used row cover on I would use some support over tomato plants. Wire hoops can work or even tomato cages although you may rip the fabric if you aren't careful. You can definately gain some advantage using the cover under another cover such as within a greenhouse. This pic is of 2 covers over rows of tomatoes within a greenhouse, inner is Agribon 30(close relative of Reemay & moderate weight), outer is Typar(very heavyweight). When nightime temperatures hang below 30F for most of the night you will often still need supplemental heat. Plus you need to remove a heavier fabric during days to allow light for your plants....See MoreFloating Row Covers - am I doing something wrong?
Comments (4)Yes, by the time I read your reply, I had shooed away the bugs I saw, and placed my cover. Oh who knows. I even went out last night and attempted to hand pollinate the little flowers, I only found two females who's flowers were open, tomorrow morning, when the bees are more active I will remove the cover. I know they will do a better job than me! I don't use pesticides, for fear of harming the bees and other good bugs.I have also decided, before I do that, to cut down my cucumbers. I have an over abundance of them (I should have only planted 2) and that should make the beetles pack their bags and head elsewhere (yeah right). The cukes are so very randomly bitter, I dare not give them away because I can't tell if they will be good or bad. I am in the process of making 'cucumber mulch'! I won't miss them and next spring will plant less. Meanwhile, I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for a good patch of melons, acorn and butternut squash. In a couple of weeks, I will plant bush beans and take my chances on peas. It's so hot here now and I see no forecast of rain in the near future. I am such a novice at this, learning as I go. Any tips would be most welcome!!! I am patient and stubborn and will eventually get my soil good and healthy. I do need a plan though, to keep me focused and to avoid feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. I want to keep this fun, darn it!!!...See More- 8 years ago
