Hey Stef, There's a lot you could do to keep them around. Do you have a birdbath? They love those. Also, you may want to think about hosting them in a proper nest box. There is a ton of information on the Sialis website about how to set up a safe box and the things you need to do along with that. I will tell you that the first year I set up a box I did it according to the Sialis site, with proper guards, the right size box/hole, an attachment on top to hold the sparrow spookers when the time came, etc. Then someone on this site told me to put something blue on the box (because they're so territorial with other Bluebirds they will check it out), so I put a piece of blue cloth on top of the box, and sure enough, they came and checked it out. here anyway i can see the birds flying from tree to tree until they land in the one with my feeders. they sit in the tree till they think it's clear and then to the feeders or the ground Everytime i put out a different feeder or a different food it takes anywhere from a few days to several weeks for them to come to it. If you see bird flying into your trees there is a good chance they will try the feeders. especially the chickadees they are the most curious and the least afraid of people. I don't use the straight suet but make a suet mix of my own. lard or shortning and peanut butter the main ingredients. but also mix in oatmeal or cornmeal or some thing elas to thicken the mix to a thick paste add nuts or raisins or whatever else. and put it in lids or trays or plastic trays similar to the suet mix trays from the stores. i have suet cages from walmart that are enameled metal that were less than 2 dollars each. the woopeckers especially like nuts in theirs but the chickadees and jays and others like almost anything.

I've found some brands of pre-made suet blocks to be significantly more popular than others; Morning Song year round suet is liked far more than Blain's Farm & Fleet. They seem to be popular with woodpeckers of various types, Downy, Red-Headed, and Hairy I've seen. BOSS is very popular in my tube feeders, but do want to try the shelled variety to eliminate the shell waste. Corn seemed to be liked by Cardinals and Blue Jays, but also attracted lots and lots of Grackles, ugh. Thistle is liked by the smaller birds, especially finches, but I think they go for the bigger seeds more if they are available. Lots of various sparrows and similar smaller birds, Mourning Doves (counted 27 at one time, all at once), no Eurasian doves here but I have seen them in the fields a few mles away. Some Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks, just saw a male Dark Eyed Junco this morning. 55 miles west of Chicago is the location. vince
