Are very nice. They are spinx moths that take nectar.
Alabama gardening allows for a lot of variety of
Species both wildflowers and cultivated crops like
One of my favourites, peanuts!.
I grow a butterfly garden these days.
There is a wild plant commonly called Ironweed
That when in bloom attracts both hummingbird moths
And pipeline swallowtails.

Sue, at least you now know your tomatoes are pollinated! Yippee! They are the cutest little things! I love them. Don't know if I will raise them again this year or not. I've already raised them two years going now. I find the cats on my honeysuckle in late summer-early fall, and winter the cocoons over in the vegetable crisper in the fridge. Susan

Very interesting, Pam! I raised several Nessus sphinx last year and below are my images of the cats and the adult moth. Mine only had one white stripe, but many have two stripes. However, the broken white line below the white stripe may very well indicate another species in the genus. Adult Moth: Caterpillars: In their last instar, the caterpillars turn the rustic brown color. In typical sphinx fashion, however, they retair their "horn". Thanks for sharing your photos!! Fantastic pictures, Kara! LOVE all your sphinx moths!! I've never seen a couple of those, and you are so lucky to have them ALL there to enjoy!! I think your "salvia" that your monarch is on is actually a russelia, if I'm seeing it right. Black calyx, long arching branches, right? It looks like russelia sarmentosa, which is also a FANTASTIC hummingbird plant. Mine froze to the ground last year, but has come back beautifully. I also noticed not as many monarchs this year as last, and I didn't find but 5 cats all summer. I had way more eastern black swallowtails this year. (Wonder if there is some correlation to the lower amount of one and the higher amount of the other?) Thanks for sharing such beautiful pictures. Nice photo! I've seen them too. Being protected from predators by their resemblance to bumblebees they fly in the daytime, not evenings as other hummingbird moths do. In fact that's how I saw my first one. I was watching bumblebees working over some flowering plants and all of a sudden I saw this one that was slightly different. Honeysuckle is one of the host plants for larvae. Thanks for posting!
