Large rain shower head over a tub

Has anyone ever put a rain shower head over a bathtub? I'm thinking of putting a large rain shower head similar to this one over my bathtub.

In my mind, laying there in the bathtub and having this giant rain shower pour all over you will be a nice, relaxing sensation. But my experience with rain shower heads is limited (they're not my favorite for taking an actual shower). Anyone think doing this is a particularly good or bad idea?

I would not find that particularly comfortable, useful, or relaxing.

I agree with Kudzu. The water'd fall into your face and out the edge of the tub. No, this is a stand-up shower item. Perhaps you could include a shower stool that could be moved under the rain shower head?

It's not that hard to find narrower vanities (19-20") and that might help. I agree with weedyacres, maybe consider a pocket door for the bathroom door.... 31" clear for the toilet is just barely enough IMHO, next to a vanity. A couple more inches would feel much better. As far as tub or shower... how do you envision using it? For example, would it be the place to wash dogs or really dirty kids or soak houseplants? In that case, a tub might be more useful. if it's just an overflow, occasional use shower (or for resale), then a small shower would be fine. I am not sure it'd be necessary to go with what most people consider the minimum comfy shower size (3 x 4) if you'll rarely use it and you're trying to maximize the space... I guess what I am saying is: what are the priorities for this space?

Wow, thanks bumble doodle! Tt is great to know that the tub works well as a shower. We are tall too--at least most of us (two of my teenage daughters are twins and one is 5'2" and the other is 5'10", so maybe the short one complains a bit but that's ok, since she complains about everything!) We are getting the non-jetted version. Also, I am hoping that building the deck at the front will help with the water spray. I am pushing the tub back into an alcove under the window the long way (so we get into the tub at the 32" side rather than from the 48" side) and we are trying to go without shower doors in order to make the bath feel open. With a deck, we buy a few more inches of length to help avoid water on the floor. We may not succeed and will put a panel on if we have to. Any thoughts on this?

I have a rainhead coming from the ceiling like this. too. I would say that it has to be far enough from the wet wall that you can stand directly under the shower head with your elbows fully extended to the side and not hit the wall. After all, the point of having a bathtub-length shower is that you have room to extend your arms if you stand sideways in it. Choosing to have a shortened glass enclosure is losing that functionality, in my eyes. At the very least, you HAVE to be able to raise your hands to your head and not hit the wall. Otherwise, why do the extra plumbing? Just use one of those rain heads that come out of the wet wall. I really enjoy my rainhead that is smack in the middle of the 5 ft length of the shower.

We did. 😊 We have Hansgrohe air-inject shower heads (one in the hall bath, one in the master bath) and Hansgrohe Axor (?) tub filler spouts in our combo tub showers.

Yes, I agree that having the rain head over your face would not be enjoyable. But wouldn't it be nice over your body? If it feels good on the top of your head I would think it would feel good if it was all over. I haven't tried so I don't know for sure, I'm just theorizing.

Another attraction to doing this is that I've never seen it done before so it would truly be a unique bathroom feature. And it would offer me another way to use the bathtub besides having to totally fill it with water.

Is this a crazy idea?

I still think it makes little sense. Even though it is a rain head, it will still only be directed at one part of your body, unless you intend to keep wiggling around like an eel. Perhaps the reason you have never seen it done before is because it's not a great idea. But you can always be the first. Please report back on how satisfied you are if you decide to proceed with this.
