DIY Interior Shaker Doors

I love interior shaker doors, specifically one-panel, but I also like 5 panel. I had them installed on my main level. I wanted them in my basement too, but could not justify the price.

I have flush hollow core oak doors on the lower level, both swing doors and bifolds - lots of them. I was going to paint them white and trim around them, and then I found this blog article. She attaches 3/16" plywood to the front and back of the doors to simulate shaker rails and stiles. Then she moves the door stop casing on the jamb to accomodate the increased width of the door edges. She said the door knobs can handle the additional width.

I can't wait to try this on both my swing doors and bifold doors! (I may have to experiment with the bifolds a little more, hmmm....)

Be very very careful

You are not gonna get away with low grade construction plywood.

You really need to use cabinet grade ply......ouch......3/8" (most recent purchase) was $39 for 4/8 sheet of pine!

Then you need to be able to sand the edges after you cut.

I say give it a try! I was doubtful until I read the blog post and I think they look great. love the black doors.. now it has me thinking of painting my interior ones black ;) Good luck!

I use those 4' orange electic fence stakes from home depot (about $1 a piece)for lots of things in the yard & gardens. Pound it in the ground and then slide the PVC pipe over it and into the soil a bit. Set out several of these with holes drilled in the PVC pipe and string wire through them to make a fairly sturdy, portable & cheap trellis. I use these stakes to build easy fencing. I use plastic cable ties to secure wire or plastic mesh fencing to them. Because I dislike the orange and it stands out like a sore thumb, I paint my stakes black. Pound 2 rows of these stakes in the ground about 4' apart and slide each end of a flexible PVC pipe over them, making an arch. Cover this with garden cloth or plastic to protect plants. I "sew" the fabric to the pvc with fishing line. If you are using plastic, cut some flaps in it, to keep it from blowing away in a big wind. I use them to brace non secured retaining walls. At my old house I built a raised bed using them to hold the lumber together. I drilled holes in the timbers and slid them over the stakes, then I lined the interior side with heavy plastic.

check out Jeldwen Rockport ProCore doors. We have them in our house now and I really like them. They aren't solid but they have something inside them to insulate sound. http://www.jeld-wen.com/catalog/interior-doors/molded/wood-composite/all-panel the rockport does have a little beaded edge around the panel, so it's not TRUE craftsmam with the totally square edges, but they do have a 3 panel named "Craftsman" that is totally square edged. we installed white shaker cabs in the kitchen reno. I replaced the pantry door with a similar shaker style glass door but didn't replace the door to the mudroom. if we did that, we'd have to replace all the doors in the house (6 panel), and our overall house isn't craftsman or shaker style, so the doors would have looked a little out of place outside of the kitchen.

Thanks guys. I THINK that I'm going to go with the Jeld-Wen 1510. Looks like the grille profile is more of a beveled angular shape, and not colonial. Which is what I'm looking for. Can't be 100% sure, because I feel like none of these Door websites have great pictures. they're all tiny, and low res. Which makes shopping touch when you're paying attention to design details.

And mechanical fasteners (nails, screws, staples, etc.) aren't very useful on hollow core doors - trim would need to be glued on.

You could use masonite also - it's a lot cheaper. My Home Depot has a panel saw, and they could rip the plywood, or masonite to the right width strips - then you would just have to cut them to length.

Remember this is going to add weight to the door. You are going to have to fill the plywood - more paint.

IMO, in the end, for the extra material, glue, sandpaper, not counting you labor, it won't be a lot cheaper.

I wouldn't count on door stops coming off of a one piece door frame without a sawzall and a lot of sanding. It might be easier to modify the frame edges and casing trim. And the nails will not work for long without glue and a lot of good clamps.

Thanks everyone. I really don't have a lot to lose. The doors and frames are not that great. I had planned to redo the casing anyway.

I have been buying 3/16" plywood to trim out the inside of my windows and it has worked out well so far. I think it's about $13 for a 4' x 8'. I plan to do one panel, not 5.

I'll pick one door to try and see how it goes. The lower level doesn't get a lot of use anyway.
