Adventures with a new garden...comes with a challenge.
Comments (4)Roundup, which is a form of glyphosate, does not contaminate the soil. However, the fumes and air-borne droplets are almost as toxic to plants as the liquid itself. I would not use Roundup or any other form of glyphosate around the roses. Woody weeds are tough to get rid of completely. If hand pulling is becoming a problem - and I agree that hand pulling prickly brambles such as blackberries can be tough work - you can try to trace the suckers back to a parent plant and, assuming the parent is well removed from the roses, use Roundup on the parent. If that doesn't work, cut down the parent plant fairly close to the ground , and apply a stump killer directly to the stump(s). Some of these come RTU in a squeeze-type bottle, and others have to be diluted and applied with a brush. To repeat, this assumes the parent is well removed from the roses.. Do not put any stump killer on the soil - only on the plant stumps...See MoreA new adventure for 2008 (I hope)
Comments (16)Thank you all for your encouraging support. As with anything new, I'm a bit nervous to say the least. I started my first creation on this new years day morning. Just have an edging to do to complete it. Geesh, it would help if I spelled the place right. Thanks GGG and Cameron for spelling it correctly. Etsy. Patti ~ It is a really neat place. Edna ~ There are so many talented people on this website that I hope to not be lost in the crowd. I'll just have to see how it goes. GGG ~ Thanks for the headsup about women you know having shops there and doing well. That is encouraging. Cameron ~ Thank you for the description of what Etsy is. Steven ~ Thanks. Annette ~ I'll post when my little space is up. Marilyn ~ Yes a new year and a new venture. Hopefully it will be worthwhile. Thanks again everyone. Your best wishes and encouragement mean a lot. I love looking at pictures of your home. Your pictures make me want to come visit...and stay awhile. Thanks for sharing....See MoreA new adventure
Comments (19)Regarding the Sawtooth oaks: About 10 years ago we had to travel to Virginia and on the way back we stopped at one of those rest areas on the highway in New Jersey and there was this giant, beautifully shaped Sawtooth oak, ( I didn't know what they were at the time) but there were hundreds of these gorgeous large acorns all over the ground. So like the plant person I am, I (my husband thought I was crazy), I picked up as many as I could throw in my purse and brought them home. I planted about 10 of them in styrofoam cups and had them in my windows and I gave another dozen or so away to a few interested people we knew. Unfortunately, at that time we had a few mice living in our house and during the night they were carefully digging up and eating all my acorns! It wasn't until several weeks later when one of the guys I gave some seeds to said that his had sprouted that I looked more closely into the cups and mine were all gone!! There is a lovely tree growing on Martha's Vineyard, complements of me and every time I see this fellow he remarks on how beautifully the tree is growing!! Just a silly story, I know......See Moremarcelo_gms
