Thanks for all the input. I have thought of the difficulty in cleaning around the smaller vanity (and I do not like cleaning bathrooms). A 42" might look better but they are harder to find. I am amazed at how pricey vanities are. If you don't go with plain jane brown oak or white, you might as well take out a loan to get one. Does anyone have any pictures of a vanity not using the whole space in a nook/alcove type of situation? As they say: a picture is worth a thousand words.

I am redoing a basement bathroom in the house that dd and friends will be renting from us. This vanity will be replacing one that was slightly larger and was shot. I wanted to give the girls as much storage as possible but still have enough room for the pre-made solid surface top that I also purchased which will overlap slightly on the ends. The whole thing will come pretty close to one wall which would make it hard to sweep in that space. But with the legs, I think it should be fine. Look at the measurements. It might work for you. I didn't want to spend a fortune and this vanity and top fit the bill. It's being installed tomorrow if you want a picture. It was really well made for the price. Thanks coll, I love it too and trying to make it work! Beverly, your drawings very very helpful. The mosaic is expensive (although not as bad as I had feared), so I don't want to use too much of it. And I'm trying to keep the other materials to a minimum so the room doesn't look chopped up with too many things going on. Somehow putting it on the bottom just seems wrong - thinking the room will appear bottom heavy with nothing interesting going on in the top section. I was thinking the second drawing which is as I described. Definitely don't want the mirror to go all the way across the top section because I think it will make the room seem "cold" and stark. I just worry that the mosaic might seem overwhelming in such a small space. Do you think if I go with the mosaic on the top over the toilet, and paint the room in a soft color that blends closely with the tile and vanity that it will be OK?

I have a walnut vanity in my only full bathroom. It is walnut veneer over birch plywood on the body, with solid walnut door/drawer fronts and a walnut slab top. I had a local specialized wood lumberyard glue heartwood planks together for the top, then router the edges. It is Waterlox-ed with four to six coats. I found the lumberyard by going to my local woodworker's shop (Woodcraft is the chain) and talking to them, and they told me about the lumberyard a half hour away. You can duplicate this look with solid walnut planks (be sure to specify heartwood if you do not want the blonder streaks) held in place with good, strong brace supports or cleats underneath. The deep front is achieved by putting another plank across the front. There is no reason for the top to be a block 6 or 8 inches thick. Your cabinetmaker can miter the edges so that they butt at the front edge and it appears to be a solid slab, but is made with solid planks. I would not use a veneer in a wet area. So, start by looking for a cabinet maker or wood worker who does small jobs, show him/her the photo of what you want and ask if they are interested in the job.
