Comments (35)hi! Checking in. I'm taking my DD out for her first driving lesson this morning at dawn's early light. Wish me luck. I've been practicing "calm" all night long! DeeMarie: Vegas? I love Vegas! When are you going? LUCKY wishes for you! Tikanas: Glad to hear SB (South Beach) is relatively easy. I have found I'm not having any trouble yet, nor is DD, but DH is asking for Bugles and OJ! He is REALLY having a hard time (carboholic) and has had terrible nightmares every night since cutting out the carbs---I wonder why? Really! If anyone knows anyone else who has experienced this, please let me know what happened after they cleaned their system out---will it get better for him? Only the shadow knows.... I hope you get your appetite back, T. We are all pulling for you. Starting my figurative scupture class at the local college today. I am really challenged in that area, so this ought to be an exercise in teaching for my teacher---lol. Jen: Did you get my email w/ Maddie's addy? I want the roasted cauliflower soup recipe, Raeanne! While I was flying home, I read a good recipe for clam soup - no cream - and we tried it the other night. DH and I liked it a lot. I made a small batch, but tomorrow, I'll make a larger one, then post the recipe. NHSuzanne, once again, the end of the month and I'm thinking heavily about you and your deadlines. Hope they went okay. I bet you are going to ride your heart out and breathe in the great outdoors this weekend! We'll wait to hear of your adventures! Hi to everyone else. Hope Magic Kitty and Patti and Dave are doing okay in FL! Be good to yourself and your bod! :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) *** beginning 4th day of South Beach - I'll add a star tomorrow if I get through this BBQ party tonight!...See More2nd Wedding Gift Threads?
Comments (12)WIP - I don't mind when additional babies come so far after other's - it's just when they are being born one right after another that I start to scratch my head as to why there has to be a full blown baby shower for each one to buy all new things that were bought 2yrs ago. Ex-SIL and I are not 'friends' per se' in the fact that we don't actively seek eachother out to do things. It's not that we don't like eachother - she's just not my 'cup of tea'. Like many divorces it is sticky. Our in-laws have a very large expanse of land for the area. When making up their will they divided the property as follows: 1 son would get a smaller amount of acreage and the other would get the larger portion of acreage w/ MIL & FIL's house. BIL took the smaller plot and then asked for his share of his inheritance early to build a house. He let SIL build what she wanted and as soon as it was able to moved into he came clean w/ everything and asked for a divorce. He planned it that way so that their boys would inherit that land and he wanted to keep their children near their grandparents who live 1000+ yards away. BIL moved out of state to where he works (it was always a long distance marriage). That's why BIL will continue to pay the mortgage even after re-marriage and that's why see her on a regular basis. She is also marrying a close friend of both DH's and BIL so everybody's lives are oddly intertwined. She really doesn't have family anywhere else and my MIL firmly believes that she will forever be her daughter (and that's cool for her) so she's always around. So Pammyfay that's the long version of why we're invited. DH and I are also very involved w/ our nephews. A poster asked about their gift list (noted as 'Gift Ideas' on the card: Visa Gift Card Gift card for a woodburning stove Bed Bath and Beyond I totally see what was mentioned about DH's gift suggestion. Point well taken. I'll look at her Bed Bath and Beyond gift registry and make the suggestion to DH (who feels the same way as his mother about family) that we get something appropriate cost wise. Thanks for the suggestion and helping me see the way other people may take things. I'm seeing a lot less red!...See MoreGift Registries - Completely out of control
Comments (46)katsmah, That's awful! This is exactly what is causing these couples to register for a bunch of ridiculous stuff that they neither need nor want! It'a actually a self-fulfilling prophesy, right? The MORE you register, the less percentagewise will get bought. So then it's easy for the clerk to say, most items on the registry would not be bought. Of course not! Because they registered for too many things! In reality, if the store clerk is right, that should be incentive for the couple to register for fewer items, so that they can ensure that the items they really want will get bought. That assumes, of course, that the pricing of the items they choose is reasonable, or at least within a reasonble range so that those who don't want to spend a fortune can find something to buy. Getting back to the "olden" days, when I got married the first time and you just registered for fine china, crystal and silver (I actually just did china and flatware), I received gifts of a dinner plate, or a cup & saucer. People who didn't want to spend the $$ to buy a whole place setting just bought the piece(s) they could afford. It all contributed to my china set. Imagine if I'd given them the option of spending that same amount on something like a relaxation CD or some other useless item. No matter how you slice it, the couple is better off registering for just the items they really want/need. I'm sure the clerk at BB&B was just doing her job, after all, that sort of thing is good for the store, right? But ugh! What a disservice to those poor couples who don't know any better!...See MoreUnconventional Wedding Registry
Comments (19)Here's what Emily said in her 15th edition (which is the one I have on my desk): "It used to be considered obligatory to send a gift, even though you could not attend the wedding. This is still true when the principals are friends whom you see from time to time, or who live nearby. In the days when that "rule" was made, people di d not move aroudn as they do today, and invitations were sent ONLY to those within a reasonable distance. Today people often send invitations to their entire list of acquaintances..., not thinking about the obligation they impose. So if you live in California and receive an invitation to a wedding in New Jersey from people ou haven't seen in ten years, don't send a gift. If you are customer, a client, or a patint of someone you meet only professionally, an dyou have never met the bride or groom, don't send a gift. .. This does not mean that you should not send a gift to a bride whose family you will see in the near future, even though youa re at a distance when the wedding takes place. For example, the daughter of people you see every summer at your vacation home, who has grown up with your children, gets married in December. The fact that you are hundreds of miles away does not relieve you of th responsibility of sending a gift, if you receive an invitation to both wedding and reception. If you don't, you will surely receive a cool "reception" yourself when you meet next summer. (italics hers, bold is mine) Basically, if you are not close enough that you'd spontaneously buy them a gift, then they shouldn't be inviting you. If they invited you and you aren't close enough to ever consider going to the wedding, then you don't gift them a gift. Brides are supposed to be keeping that obligation in mind, and are supposed to be keeping their guest lists conservative....See More- 10 years ago
