Snake ID ?

last modified: 10 years ago

i was cleaning debris out from beneath some gardenia bushes a few days ago and exposed a snake I didn't recognize. By the time I returned with my camera it was gone.

It it was folded up on itself, so I have only a vague guess as to its size but it was small (girth probably about 2cms at max) and longish. It was dark on the top and with a very white belly.

When I look up snakes of South Carolina, the queen snake seems to fit best, but it isn't shown to have a range on the flood plains, only the Piedmont.

I'm in Myrtle Beach about 4 miles from the ocean. Anyone hazard a guess as to my snake friend?
