This is a pretty common mistake where the beige tones of travertine read pink and clash with gold-toned granite. I don't know that there's a solution other than tearing it out.

This is why I'm terrified of doing a backsplash, and I can see undertones pretty well.

when is the film coming off the counter? can't say too much until that happens. do you have under cabinet lighting? that will impact this. It's not finished..stove micro/hood/switchplates all need to go in....I see some of the issues about shading, I'm not sure I think it's really distressing or anything like that...in a way, with countertop canisters/coffee pot/etc, I think I could like it. Your call whether you want to approach them to yank it out. Just a plain subway instead....??? I would probably leave it....each person will see the situation differently.

I also think it's because the bs has pink undertone. The accent tiles look nice. Have they grout the bs? If not, they should be able to take that out easily. Sorry I don't have a solution other than tearing those square tiles out.

I agree with mayflowers. I think you have an undertone clashing problem. I to was scared of this and called in a color consultant to help me pick cabinet color and back splash as I did not trust myself. I'm sorry, but I think you will do yourself a favor to bite the bullet and change it now. Much easier now than when you are living there.

Well, yeah, it's not great and the problem is the travertine. Just pull it down and start over. Wel'll help you pick something nice.

I agree to change it now. You will never be happy with it and better to do it know than later on when you just can not live with it any longer.

Well the good news is that your cabinets and your granite look gorgeous together. And I love the all knobs look.

Your cabinets and knobs look very good! It's a bit hard to tell from your photo, but it's possible that the backsplash installation doesn't match your sample board. For example, your sample board shows the feature strip between the small horizontal tiles (usually installed at the counter/bottom (?) ) and the larger tiles. In your finished install, it looks as if the feature strip is in the middle between two rows of the larger tiles. Again, the photo could be deceiving me, but if not then maybe they got the entire backsplash install upside down, and you can ask for it to be taken out for that reason.

Hm, boring as I am, I actually think there's too much going on with the granite, the variegated tile, the accent mosaics.

I'm so glad that's a film on the granite!! My first thought was, "Oh, my, what she thinking?" LOL

If you can afford to change it, do it now before everything else goes in. You can always paint the walls until you settle in and find a tile you love.

One of the issues with laying things out like your samples is that you're not seeing them in the planes they will exist in after installation and changing planes changes color perception a lot. If you can stomach it, pull it out and finish the kitchen without a back splash and attack it later when you are ready. Sorry you're disappointed - it's tough making all these decisions under pressure.

Too many patterns of the same size going on. The pattern in the granite and the pattern of the travertine are the same size and fighting. You might have gotten away with the accent tile if you had a plain subway tile.

Yea, sorry, the travertine reads pink and the mosaic strip is too busy with the granite. Have them tear it out now. Can you wait on the backsplash replacement until everything is done? My last house never even had a backsplash, so if I were you, I would let it set until the rest is finished.

The good news is the cabinets and granite look like they'll be great together!

I agree he tones of the bs tile are too punk. In addition I think the square shape reads as dated. I would go with a subway shape if you want to try and keep the mosaic strip- not sure if that could be done. I'm not a huge fan of the mosaic strip to begin with. but the square tile has to go.

Thanks so much for your comments, everyone! I am overwhelmed by all the kind responses! My husband seems to like what we have right now (maybe bcoz he doesn't want to spend money ripping it and replacing it!). The builder won't rip it for us. We will have to do it after we settle.

I am not a fan of the accent stripe or accent triangle BS pieces, but that is a personal opinion. I wouldn't want your current BS, but that is me. Have you had a chance to take the protective film off yet? Maybe you will like it after the film is off and you can see it all come together. If you don't like it - I think now is the time to remove and make another choice. In my world, if I let something go, it will never be corrected.

So sad you aren't happy with the BS. Such stressful decisions and added stress if you aren't okay with it all later. But, on a good note, the cabs look GREAT. And, really, the BS is small stuff in the grand scheme money wise, but it does tie it all together.

What we are reading pink might not be so in real life. Remember we are seeing a photo and all monitors read things differently. I say that because her sample doesn't read pink, so it could just be the way it was photographed.

Mommy, only you know if the backsplash is too pink or not. If it doesn't read pink, then I think the whole thing will be fine once you have everything else in the house. If it reads too pink, then yes, you may decide to rip it out or you may decide to live with it and work around it.

IMO, there's too much going on, but it sounds like you were hoping for more color. Maybe a solid color subway tile, in the darkest gray or beige, or something sparkly, maybe glass or onyx, might be the way to go.

The racing stripe bothers me more than the color; can't judge the color adequately until the blue film comes off.

I agree with nosoccermom - do some glass or something with a reflectivity - and not something that adds a lot of pattern. Your cabinets are lovely - be the glaze and raised panel make them more intricate than most. Couple that with a granite with a lot of activity (not movement so much - but pattern), and then to try to add a slight pattern on the field tile backsplash AND a stipe of a mosaic - it's a lot going on.

Up the bling by toning down the activity on the backsplash - playing more with light and layout than color changes.... I also think that it will look more up to date...

Funny, I have the same granite in my master bath. I had a gal over here several yrs ago helping me pick out paint colors for the house.

She saw green in the granite and suggested a pretty SW green for the room. I was puzzled. I couldn't see the green in the granite.

I used a basic off white subway tile with that granite behind the vanities.

re men and travertine. Again - same husband! He sure does "get around." Uggg. I agreed to it with the last kitchen and am so glad we negotiated that I got to choose the next if we ever did another kitchen. hahaha
