My guessing you are referring to the blizzard of 1993! I was at home tending the fire in the fireplace.

Oh yes, The Storm Of The Century as it was sometimes called. Snow in Jacksonville, FL (very rare) and a 16 hour power outtage - no heat and no alternative heat source.. Not fun, but, mild compared to anywhere futher north on the eastern seaboard.

It must not have affected me too bad. I don't remember it.

The most snow I've ever experienced at one time in SE PA or NJ. Was "snow bound" in my little cul de sac for..... about 36 HOURS, before township plow finally rescued us from certain death. Luckily, no power problems (heat or lights), so life went on while we watched the snow.

The one I remember most was January 1996. DD was born on the 5th. On the 7th, I had to shovel 2 cars out of my path to get to the hospital to bring them home, and 2 more on the way home. In the 70 mile round trip, I saw only a handful of others out there, and no plows.

I was living along the coast of southern South Carolina at the time, and all I remember is two days of constant, howling wind, night and day. We somehow missed the snow blizzards.

Glenda, the reason I posted about this is because of Robert, who was telling me of it in some detail this morning. It was bad enough in Huntsville, but Birmingham (where you are) got hit even worse.

I vividly recall hearing about it from my family members living in central NYS, near Syracuse. Yikes!

"Storm of the Century....1993"

We were at the airport on St. Thomas, along with a lot of other visitors who were trying to get a flight before all planes were grounded on the east coast.

It was a month before my dad died, and he was in the hospital. I was probably in Florida visiting him, because I don't remember it at all. If you ask me about Hurricane Sandy, however . . .

Remember it well. Our son and gf were on their way home from down south, spent one night in a church, one night with strangers, etc. they were stuck on interstate for ages, took them days to get back here. We were so worried! Funny thing is, I told him on the phone, big snow coming, he said " Mom, I didn't call you to get a weather report". He remembers it well too!!

I do remember that. My brother, two sisters and I decided to have a surprise 75th birthday party for our Mom. My sisters and some of their kids drove in from down state NY. One sister's car got buried in our driveway. All you could see was a little circle on one of the side windows. I never saw so much snow in my life or all the water when the snow melted.

I remember the blizzard of 82 in Denver Colorado! Martial law was enforced. I nearly died in a white out in our half mile driveway. I hope to never experience anything like that.

I remember the blizzard, as my mother left us shortly afterwards.

I lived in central Florida at the time. We went to the movies came out and power lines were done everywhere. The wind and rain was crazy, my area had awful flooding for weeks.

They call it the no name hurricane here, guess because we didn't get a blizzard we got a lot of wind and rain.

There was an ice storm close to that time that shut down Nashville, so I'm going to say that was the year? If it was, I was the only one in my family who had power, for a couple of weeks. My mom and dad have been divorced since I was five, but have been amicable. I say that because they both ended up in my 530sq ft apartment, along with my stepmother. It was odd, but ok!

And now that I've looked it up, that was 1994 for us. Apparently we weren't affected by the storm of the century. ETA: I looked even deeper. We totally lucked out in Nashville and were unaffected by the 1993 storm, even though south and east of us was hit hard! Weird.

I remember it well. I was a senior in high school and the blizzard shut everything down here in East Tennessee. We never got out of school for snow but that March we were out for days! The snow was so deep that cars were nothing but white lumps, indistinguishable from each other or anything else. We couldn't open the back door because the snow was so high (the front at least had a bit more overhang to protect it). Every time a "big" snow is set to head this way it is compared to the blizzard of '93.

I don't think I would ever forget it. I was coming home from work. Picked up my daughter and started for home. Got stuck trying to get up the hill towards home and couldn't get very far. My sisters boyfriend battled the storm to come out and move my car while we walked home. After the roads were clear we had no idea where he moved my car. lol. We finally found it somewhere on another side road. What a day that was.

My husband and I were MOVING from CT to AZ driving through PA right down the Appalachian Mountains! The called it the storm of the century.

Were stuck in MD for 2 days, virtually stranded in VA for 3 more. The interstates were so blocked, they were shut down off and on - and by nightfall all the thawed areas were iced over. They were reporting it took all day to go 100 miles and people couldn't find motels near any of the shut down points. We just holed up in what was available 150-200 miles away.

It took us 10 days to get from CT to AZ, should have taken 4. 5 extra days of motels and eating out really cut into our limited moving budget. Oh, we were young and stupid--we should have just stayed off the roads or driven much further north!

March 13, 1993. We got 40" of snow. Were stuck for 4 days, everyone that came to plow out or long, steep driveway got stuck, so a bigger piece of equipment had to come in the pull out the tractors.

It was also extremely cold. I remember DH leaving for work at 5 am and it was -5. The kids missed a week of school.

The weight of the snow collapsed small metal shed and destroyed everything inside. The one blessing was we never lost our electricity, still amazes me that we didn't.

I lived in Germany then - that's all I remember about March of 1993.

I was 9 months pregnant and concerned I would go into labor. Fortunately, I ended up delivering 7 days late! The next weekend, the newspaper showcased those moms who relied on snowmobiles to get to the hospital because emergency vehicles could not get everywhere.

Where I live its the winter storm of 95-96 and you just mention it and people remember or they heard of it. It was bad, stopped everything, there on the radio asking does anyone have skidoes to take people to their appointments dialysis to the hospitals, people ran out of all kinds of items, it was desperate times and no power and it went on for 6 days and my suite in bottom of parents was an icebox, I had broken my wrist in two places and was in agony but the pain pills looped me so only took once and that was it for those. Alot died from heart attacks from shoveling snow. ONE young lady radio announcer walked to work from her place and it was a long walk in deep, deep snow but she did it. The hospitals were working around the clock and they were stuck there unless ones that could relieve lived within walking distance and could make it. They were desperate for baby formulas, diapers, milk, bread and one store took huge advantage and hiked the prices and wow, it went into war to that owner doing that in desperate times and people banned that store for long time afterwards. You help people out not stab them in the back.

Also alot died due they use things like bbq but didn't have it in open areas trying to give heat to their family.

We had one day of power and heat and that was Christmas day and wow, we cooked and so we had turkey to eat after that and it helped lots.

But our golden retriever we didn't have dog food to give to him as my dad always waited until last second and couldn't get it for him. He ate things he never touched and New Years my dad found him in rough shape and thankful we had our driveway plowed and roads plowed and dad took him to vets and found so much inside him when they pumped out his stomach. I got blamed as always over that.

The power going out and my broken wrist was hardest on me and not able to help my dad and he shouldn't have been shoveling,etc. but I couldn't do it.

And sitting in an icebox the whole time except for christmas day we got it back.

I remember a little about that storm. As I recall, Wisconsin did not get hist a bad as some other places, but we did get our share. It was one of our bigger snows. I left work early and barely manages to get home. Our snow plows ran all night, therefore, major roads and streets were passable the next day. There was a big hazard. Many intersections had huge piles of snow at the corners that obstructed the view of side roads until one was out in the intersection. Drivers mounted all sorts of flags on their radio aerials for visibility, whimsical things such as orange pennants, school and sports flags, panties, under shirts, and a teddy bear hanging on for dear life with his front paws.

Later in the day, after the plow crews had a bit of rest, they began to push back those piles of obstructions. In the city, a number of cars were damaged by snow plows because those were not very visible and had not adhered to the snow parking ordinance. (Many cities in my state has a snow emergency that when the snow exceed 3 inches, you are to park on one side of the street only. On even number days, park on the even address side and on odd days, park on the odd address side. many drivers the night of that storm, if their car was parked when the snow came, it stayed there not to be moved until the next day, maybe.)
