That bark is pretty unusual for a tatarian maple....no?? Sources say mature trees will have ridged or plated bark but not that any coloring will be so distinct. I have never seen one with such a strong light/dark contrast like that. It being Acer tataricum makes a lot more sense with a Reno location :-))

It's a Platycladus orientalis, aka Oriental arborvitae. You don't trim it - it doesn't require it and any pruning or trimming will destroy the growth habit.

First two pics look like oak of some species -- maybe white oak for the second pic. Last pic too dark. Gotta do better w/your pics to get a good ID.
