Spring surprise!

Hi all.

I've been waiting in anticipation for any kind of growth from my garden. I've got spring fever real bad. The last few days I finally noticed some growth, I have some daffodils come up and the surprise, my day lilies have come up. I was expecting my crocus to show up before any lily would. We've had a warmer winter this year, at least in my part of town. I'm in batavia OH. Z6b. What surprises did you guys get, if any?

We have had a very warm winter so i have lilies up now.

I am a hundred or so miles north of you and have all my early spring bloomers going, but also hyacinths two weeks ahead of schedule. Seems like everything is early this year -- even the plants over wintered in the garage and basement (Anemones, tender agastache, amaryllis, dahlias) are growing gangbusters -- The agastache had 6-8 inches of new growth when I uncovered them, and the amaryllis have one foot tall flower buds already, although they hadn't yet been taken out of their dark corner and watered!

if you have vista pix.. you made it home for easter .... may as well add in some sappy.. HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS .... and of course the old standard.. The 'Zillertal' is a true Picea abies cultivar. The exact name is Picea abies var. alpestris 'Zillertal' and is found by GÃ¼nther Eschrich from Germany in Germany in 1984. The Picea abies var. alpestris do have blue-ish needles. He also found in the same area another witches'broom which he called 'Lawine'. Picea abies var. alpestris 'Lawine'

Thank you, jean. Yes, I do stake most of my tall lilies. We get some horrific wind storms here sometimes--don't want to go out to the garden and find all my statuesque lilies flat on ground, now do I? : ) Kate

Pleasant Spring Surprises

I was looking around today and have a few surprises...I do have an anemone coming back that I thought was not hardy here. One out of three bulbs is better than none. Plus I have a patch of self sown seedlings that are near a Delphinium that I love and I am hoping that is what they are. Lupines self seeded and I left the pansies in the pot outdoors all winter and I just noticed there are a lot of little seedlings just popping up! My favorite variety last year too. Then to top it all off, I was so excited to see a 15x3ft area that I had annual portulaca has a lot of seedlings popping up. I am keeping my fingers crossed that is what they are. I put in an apricot portulaca right up next to the street, in an area that perennials one after the other have not made it, with the idea it might self seed and come back every year....so that would tickle me. Oh, and I just remembered I had a callirhoe seedling pop up from NEWFS seeds in a winter sown container. Excellent! Last year I tried it and had none. All in all...a fun day.
