I have a smart phone and I have tried various garden apps and I find that they have very "general" information. The weather and timing is so very different here in Oklahoma that a lot of the stuff in the apps don't apply. The dates are way off and they don't have the variety of plants that I plant. If they came up with an app like this but with a HUGE data base of plants, then it would be awesome! (not only that, but if the device fails, you don't have your garden journal, I am not willing to risk that)

Google sketch up is pretty great ... Watch the tutorials first you'll get really excited.... I played the tutorials on one computer, paused, and the practiced on another, until I figured it out. Good luck!

I don't use it myself, but I hear many people use Sketchup for landscape drawing. On another note, it's many times the case of ideas/pictures in one's head, that when they first come out they're in a greater state of disarray than it previously seemed. While computer drawings are great for their tidiness, using a computer for bantering about ideas might not be the most intuitive way to sort them out. I think it's hard to beat plain old paper and pencil for roughing out ideas. Armed with a roll of tracing paper, a person can sketch out the basic, known elements and then proceed to quickly try/explore numerous possibilities as overlays. One does not need to waste effort with erasing. Just keep the tracing paper coming. Eventually, as ideas gel, they could be transferred from tracing paper to base sheet. One could end up with something more fitting to enter into a computer drawing, where final refinements are made.
