Ideas on how to update fireplace?
We are in the process of replacing the fireplace unit itself with a new gas insert but not sure what to do about the ledges, etc. It's an awkward layout because of the wood elevator door to the left, but we'd like to keep the elevator working (great for moving things up and down from our storage area!) We've thought about replacing the limestone ledges with matching brick, putting a new door on the elevator, and adding a mantel? Thoughts? Suggestions?

8 years agoThe limestone doesnt really go with the brick at all. If you want to keep the brick, I would change all the limestone to bluestone. Thats typically what is used to mantels and ledges. I just re did my fireplace that was brick and bluestone and did it in cultured stone. I would probably do some sort of wood mantel since you have a rustic look going on with the deer mount.
This is before, with bluestone ledges, mantel and hearth.
After, we removed the ledges, and changed the mantel to wood and the hearth to limestone.

What you might consider if there is enough room is getting a cabinet where the tv can be mounting inside and a remote brings it up into the open for view. I saw the construction of such a cabinet on youtube at one point but don't have the link. I have one that I bought used sitting in my garage but it has more cabinets with it and is fairly large. Comments (4)I really like the way that the mantle ties in with your beams on the ceiling. The metal surround makes the fireplace look outdated, so you may want to replace that. Overall, your fireplace looks nice, just plain. Consider adding some plants or artwork on the mantel. This will give it character and catch your eye. Comments (0)Looking for ideas on how to update this small shed style 70s home, siding is new hardie plank with aluminum shutters , definitely needs a new roof and any other ideas are welcome. I'm stuck and can't think of anything. Considering a matte standing seam roof but also thought about should a porch be added over the front door. Thinking of removing louver shutter spacers perhaps or black windows. Different paint color maybe. I'm stuck for how to improve the exterior. 8 years agoI think a brick hearth and wood mantle would give it a nice updating
Or you could have a stone veneer laid over it. Being a mason I would choose a natural stone.
