Ikea Super Hack - Part 2
Comments (58)Dutty nails it with this quote: "Is Ikea for everyone? No. Are there better cabinets out there? Yes. But for the money, it's a VALUE and you can do amazing things with a little ingenuity. Plus, with the savings you can put drawers everywhere, inserts, soft close, etc. All of those would be UPGRADES with a cabinet company. The thing you need to be most careful with is who you hire to put it all together and PLAN. PLAN. PLAN⦠make sure you KNOW the product inside and out. " Dh was just drilling through a Home Depot particleboard panel that had an IKEA cabinet behind it. He remarked that it was incredible how much denser the IKEA cabinet side was compared to the no-name particleboard - not the same stuff at all. Also, he had a major allergy attack while working with the Home Depot particleboard - something he hadn't experienced during hacking the IKEA cabinets at all. I wondered if that's because IKEA particleboard is made to EU standards which limits some VOC levels, etc. It's a mistake to assume that all particleboard is created equal. IKEA wouldn't be able to warranty their kitchens for 25 years if their stuff was the same crappy material that my home's original 2001 builder grade cabinets were made from for example....See MoreTrash Pullout Under 10" Deep Sink
Comments (30)Elaine Caputo, that is my set up, although my drain is offset to the rear center, but the drain pipe does run to and connect on the right side of the interior. It was easily done. I bought THIS REV-A-SHELF 2 bin pullout, installed on the left. I only use one of the tall bins that came with the unit - for recycling. I replaced the other bin with a smaller/shorter one for my trash - I didn't need such a large bin for trash, the smaller bin allows me to recycle grocery bags as trash bags, and leaves some room for whatever you like in the front. Of course you could use both tall bins. On the right, in front of the drain pipes, I put a 14" wide, 18" deep pullout. I think that there are also 2 tier pullouts that might work (depends on your pipes), but I installed a side wall mounted narrow pullout from Ikea above it (no longer made, I think). So, on this right side, I have my small lidded compost container (actually a small metal trash can), and plenty of room for my cleanser, sponges, rags, dishwasher cleaning tablets, and so on. The smaller, shorter items go at the back of the pullout to not bump the pipes. I keep frequently used tools (screwdriver, tape measure, flashlight) and a few other sundries in the wall mounted bin. I also have a garbage disposal and dish soap dispenser in there. My sink is a Blanco 28" (26" interior width) single bowl, and I love it's roominess....See MoreIkea kitchens with trash pull-outs.... what's your experience?
Comments (10)We used an 18-inch base cabinet with the deep drawer at the bottom and a shallow drawer on top. We attached a regular door front to the deep drawer hardware (can't remember exactly how we did it but it wasn't complicated). I didn't want to use the small IKEA trash bins so I looked all over to find the largest trash can that would fit the space; I can't remember exactly how big the can is (I think it was a Rubbermaid can) but it fits exactly side to side and top to bottom (without the lid) and is the perfect size for the Costco 13-gallon kitchen bags. I thought I would then look for a smaller can to fit behind for recycling but until I could find it we started putting a paper grocery sack behind the main can and it worked so well that I never looked for a smaller can. We reuse the sack until it gets too weak and then throw it into the recyling with whatever is in it. We've been using the trash set up for 2 1/2 years with no problems; the door/drawer seems as sturdy and stable as it did when we started using it. And that's with two teenagers who certainly aren't concerned about overstuffing the trash can....See MoreShow me your Ikea Sektion Trash Pull-out under sink with disposal!
Comments (1)Here's ours. What I ended up doing was getting a 15" deep drawer for the 24" deep cabinet. I still had to use a medium depth drawer, the deep wouldn't fit. You can see the automatic cabinet opener installed on the bottom of the cab, which works moderately well....See More- 8 years ago
