Broccoli and Brussel sprout seedlings

I know they are cold tolerant plants but not sure about at the seedling stage. We are now between 43-52 at night but this is the first week we've had night time temps like this, I don't expect it to drop much more maybe mid to high 30's could be possible but don't think. Would I do more harm than good planting out this soon? Here are a few of the seedlings. They are in the basement at about 50 degrees.

Most of them look like they only have 1-2 true leaves so yeah I'd wait until the second set of true leaves develop. They will tolerate exposure better at that stage. At this point sun and wind exposure could easily kill them. Either way they need a week or so of hardening off first before you can transplant.

Yes, they aren't big enough to transplant even if the temperature is OK for them. Apart from weather, any passing snail would destroy them in a matter of minutes. You can plant out brassicas even when they're quite big so there's no hurry. I wait until they're at least 6 inches tall and then plant deep up to the lowest leaves.

Check with your county extension. Usually there are different planting dates for brassicas for SEEDS and PLANTS. I do all my brassicas as indoor starts. It's just so much easier, especially for fall plantings. 6-8 weeks before expected planting. Also... it's easy for ME to say because we hardly ever get a hard freeze here, but brassicas handle frost pretty well -- upper 20's no problem.. Kevin

I've planted broccoli for quite a while but don't recall having tried a close (1 ft) spacing. However, I spoke to a supplier to our local Farmer's Market last fall. He plants Pacman at about 1 ft spacing and does very well. He did mention that he's not interested in any side shoots. I plant broccoli 19 to 20 inches apart in 3 ft wide rows. This seems to be about the optimal spacing/production for me. A few years ago I began planting brusssels sprouts and used a 12 inch spacing. I concluded it was a bit too close. The plants seemed to need a bit more "elbow room". So last year I went 15 inches. This seemed to be a increase production a bit so this year I plan to experiment with a 17 inch spacing. The only variable that that seems to yield little or no production for me is choice of cultivar. I don't recall which are the poor producing broccoli cultivars. I long since only planted the ones thad do well for me. Growing brussels sprouts in the deep south has been a bit of a challenge. On brussels sprouts, Catskill and Long Island Improved are poor producers for me. Jade Cross has been my cultivar of late. (I'm open to suggestions for other deep south brussels sprouts choices.)

alamo5000, I wanted to respond earlier with a photo but kept forgetting to take it. We are in the same climate zone. Broccoli, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts do wonderful as a fall/winter vegetalbe in our neck of the woods. I usually set out about 150 to 160 plants each year. They tend to do fine as long as the temperatures stay mid 20's or above. They do get a bit stressed in the lower 20's. And, when the temperature stays below 20 for long periods, there will be plants losses. Anyway, here is a photo. Plants on the back row were planted early September. They are just beginning to show heads. Plants under the date were planted the mid to late October. These late plantings are past our recommended planting window.

Thanks, it's good to know that the seedlings can handle the temps. I will harden them off before I plant in the raised garden bed. I will wait longer before I plant them out, 6 inches sounds like a good size to plant out, thanks for the tip. I started from seed and instead of culling, I separated and potted up so I have way more than I want. Family and Co-workers will get a few.

I planted mine outside directly and the seedlings didn't even blink with temps in the 30s. They stalled for a little bit and then started growing again when the temp got higher. I planted broccolini-like veggies, I think they're about the same as broccoli in temperature tolerance.
